Update ~ April 29-May 4, 2018

Please read the information below.  Once we are notified that schools will reopen I will post a PantherReport with dates for upcoming meetings, events etc.

ANNOUNCEMENT FOR FUSD SUPERINTENDENT

FUSD Staff,

It has been announced the #RedForEd Walk-Out will continue to next week. Based on the number of leave requests submitted by FUSD staff, a decision has been made to close schools to students on Monday, April 30 because the district does not have a level of staff needed to maintain safe operations and educational services. Students will exceed the state’s minimum of instructional hours, using the district’s approved calendar and the make-up days on May 10-11, and therefore will not need to make-up the instructional time missed on Monday, April 30. Decisions about how to make-up missed instructional days or time for students will be made on day-to-day basis.

FUSD will designate Monday, April 30 as a Staff Work Day. Certified and classified staff will be expected and allowed to report to work on Monday, April 30 unless leave has been requested using the district’s policies and procedures. Staff returning to work on Monday should check-in with their principal or supervisor as alternative duties may need to be assigned.

The following announcement will go out to students, parents and the community this later morning.

All Flagstaff Unified School District schools will continue to be closed for students on Monday, April 30 due to the statewide #RedforEd Walk-Out. Schools will remain closed until an end of the Walk-Out is announced or a level of FUSD staff return to maintain safe operations of the school district. Students and families will continue to be updated about the closure of FUSD schools or when schools will reopen. Information about school closures, meal programs and childcare opportunities offered in our community will continue to be posted on the district website www.fusd1.org and social media.

Update ~ April 25, 2018

CELEBRATING SUCCESS...
A special congratulations to Kelley Smith for being recognized as an "Ambassador of Excellence" by Coconino County last week.  I can't think of a more fitting title for Kelley. Thank you for all you do Mr. Kelley Smith!
Also a shout out to our Coconino High School’s JROTC Leadership Team; Alaina Paul (Team Captain), Kaleb Herrelko, Grace Morris, and Matthew Neve.  The team earned top scores in the recent JROTC Leadership Bowl earning them a spot in the national championships in Washington D.C. this June.
Congratulations and Go Panthers!

UPDATES...
This Wednesday, April 25, we will resume the early release Wednesday schedule.
Please read the letter below from Superintendent Penca regarding school closure this week:

                                                School Closures Due To Walkout
The Flagstaff Unified School District will close all schools beginning on Thursday, April 26 due to participation by educational staff in the statewide #RedforEd Walk-Out. Schools will remain closed until the Walk-Out ends or a level of FUSD staff return to work to guarantee safe operations of the school district. Parents will be notified when schools will reopen. Information will continue to be posted on the district website www.fusd1.org and social media. Please refer to the Frequently Asked Questions information distributed on Friday, April 20. Your support for FUSD and understanding during this unprecedented time are much appreciated.

As mentioned above from, this type of event for FUSD is unprecedented.  Each day we will try to stay abreast of what is happening and make decisions about upcoming scheduled events and let you know as soon as possible.  Should you have questions, feel to email me and I will do my best to find the answers or forward your questions to the appropriate person at the district office.

Stay tuned...

Power of your presence
Please remember to be visible in the hallways during passing periods.  Being visible changes the whole atmosphere of the school, and changes the climate.  As the school year begins to wind down it is critical to remember to be at your door during passing periods. Teacher presence in the hallways can help change behavior and works to promote and maintain a positive school climate.  When students see us in the hallways they often self-correct their behavior, just because you are there.  For an added power play to help promote a positive learning environment, say hi to everyone that you can. Thank you!

Update ~ April 16-20, 2018

CELEBRATiNG SUCCESS...
The RedforEd events of the past week have certainly drawn long overdue attention to the financial plight of Arizona Teachers.
Congratulations to all the participants, now we'll keep our fingers crossed, hope and pray that the Governor's response and promise for a real pay raise come to fruition.

HIRING PROGRESS UPDATE...
We are working side by side with the human resource department to open positions, review applicants and interview candidates in search of the best teachers to fill the big shoes of all who are leaving CHS.  Thank you to the department chairs and department members, for your help in this process.

To date, we have several math positions filled (still waiting to hear back from a few) and we have hired a new counselor.   English teacher interviews are in process and we will be selecting candidates for interviews for our Special Education positions this week and next. Soon to follow will be CTE (welding), P.E. and Tier 3 RTR.

As you all now know we are also in search of an assistant principal position. I am in the process of forming the hiring committee.  My plan is to include district level representation, one CHS classified representative (Becky Gonzales), our Athletic Director, a parent and one teacher.  If you have an interest in participating on this hiring committee, please email me by tomorrow, 4/16 at 5:00pm. Once I hear from you I will share the proposed schedule for meetings, application review, and interviews.  Please note, the schedule will include evenings,  one of the snow day make up days (May 10) and a Saturday in May.

I hope you will join us for our fond farewell gathering on Friday, May 18, 4:00 pm at Salsa Brava. This is a tough year for CHS, we are saying goodbye to some of the very best.

GRADUATION...
The CHS 2018 Commencement Ceremony is on the horizon. Our ceremony will take place at the NAU Skydome on June 1 at 3:00pm. As always all faculty and staff are invited to attend and sit in the VIP section on the field with the graduates. Last year teachers formed a high five semi-circle that people are still talking about. I highly encourage you to attend this special event. FYI NAU now follows the Clear Bag Policy for all events at the dome.  Click here for details about the policy.

Please don't forget to nominate students for awards and recognition.  Click here for the survey

On a personal note...
Thank you all for the beautiful cards, well wishes, prayers, kind words and hugs as I returned to school following the passing of my mother. Education and learning was everything to my mom and I bragged about you all and our students to her all the time.  On her behalf, I thank you for what you do every day. I have included here the link to my mom's (Audrey Wohl) obituary should you have an interest in reading a little about her. Click here

LOOKING AHEAD...
There are two events happening the first week of May that I wanted you all to be aware of.
Building background...Last year our CHS Library received a generous donation from the family of Dr. Jane Julien.  Dr. Julien was one of the first librarians at CHS and during her tenure, she made significant strides in technology and library improvements.
In honor and memory of Dr. Julien, we are renaming our CHS library to be the Dr. Jane Julien Library at Coconino High school.

May 1, we will host an open house reception and everyone will be invited to enjoy refreshments and see the new "Technology Reading Corner." We will send details soon but wanted you to be aware.
Also,
May 2 is our annual Spotlight on Success Faculty meeting. This is a time to share with one another the points of pride from each department. A formal presentation is not necessary but between now and May 2 you might want to choose a spokesperson for your department to share a brief two-minute highlight at the Spot Light on Success Meeting.
