Update ~ March 12-16, 2018
CELEBRATING SUCCESS...
Another extraordinary week for CHS. The week kicked off with the annual citywide STEM celebration at the NAU Skydome. CHS was well represented thanks to our CTE and CIT teachers and our world famous Robotics Team. THANK YOU ALL!
Speaking of Robotics, this weekend our CocoNuts Robotics Team participated in the For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology (FIRST) competition also at the Skydome. The CocoNuts won the Inspiration Award and are headed to the World Championships, congratulations and Go Nuts! Also, the state-wide speech and debate tournament was a grand success and gave hope for a bright future. CHS student Mya Trent placed 4th for Dramatic Interpretation and Aidan Rhodes placed 5th in the event called "Congress". Congratulations to all, so proud to be a Panther.
MARCH 14...
As you all know, this Wednesday, March 14 is a day when students across our country will be participating in a nationwide walk out. CHS admin has met with students in our school who are planning to walk out. We have expressed to the students that we do not support a walkout off campus. The students have agreed to stay on campus and we feel it is in the best interest of all to help manage the walk out and do our best to keep our students safe as they stand united in memory of the seventeen teenagers and express their collective voice regarding school safety. In order to keep our students safe and respect the students who do not wish to participate, we have to have a plan.
The plan:
Wednesday, March 14
9:35 am ~ 3rd period begins as usual and teachers will take attendance as always
10:00 am ~ Some students will stand and walk quietly to the football field
10:05 am ~ Teachers will take a second roll (on a paper roster provided by the office)
10:05 am ~ Students will read the names of the 17 individuals who lost their lives in Florida.
Following the 17 minutes, some students plan to return to class while some pre-planned speeches regarding School Safety will be shared
10:25 am ~ Transition time to return to Period 4/5
10:30 am ~ An announcement over our PA system reminding students to return to their 4/ 5 period classes at this time!
Students who return to class during period 4 / 5 after roll has been taken will be marked tardy. Students who do not report to class by will be marked absent for the period.
FYI...
We have several teaching positions open for next year. The interview season has begun, which means Cris and I will be even more busy than usual. The best time to schedule meetings with us will be early morning, before school. On a side note, I will be out of the building on Thursday and Friday this week, Les Hauer will be filling in during my absence.
DATES TO REMEMBER...
3/12 ~ Civics Exam
3/12 ~ IB Committee meeting Room 201 at 2:45 pm
3/12 ~ IB Committee meeting Room 201 at 2:45 pm
3/15 ~ Fire Drill, 1:35 pm
3/16 ~ Just a few more hours until Spring Break
Have a wonderful and safe spring break!

YOUR VOICE...
In the spirit of continuous improvement everybody's voice is critical. The CHS Leadership Team is in the final phases of the development of a five year strategic plan for CHS. The plan is based on accreditation requirements, research on highly effective schools, FUSD Vision and Goals and your input over the past few years. In the next couple of months we will be asking for your feedback by way of mini surveys. Please take a few minutes and Click here to take the survey Thank you in advance for your time and contribution to our long range plan for CHS.
WHAT THE TECH?...
The PBIS data committee has conducted an analysis of data from Minor Infraction Forms (MIFs). The data show that infractions of the electronic device policy are the most common reason for referral to PBIS Tier 2 behavioral intervention. Based on this analysis it is necessary to address the inappropriate use of electronic devices at CHS. The first step of this process is to review the electronic device policy and how it is implemented in individual classrooms. The second step is to evaluate the effectiveness of the electronic device policy and its implementation in each classroom. The third step is to develop improvements and adjustments that will alleviate the distractions from learning that inappropriate use of electronic devices cause. In the coming weeks members of the PBIS committee will be interviewing teachers to determine the scale of this issue; the effectiveness of current policy; and gather perspectives about how the CHS learning community should respond to this issue. Thank you.
