PLCs: Thank you for your dedicated work last week during our Collaborative Team Meetings. The Attendance team pored over nearly 400 letters of appeal to determine whether or not students would be awarded credit. The Safety team is continuing the work on streamlining the discipline referral process and protocol for CHS. The Grades team examined the recent mark analysis and continues to address areas of concern. The Connectedness team had a lively discussion about what causes connectedness, specific areas of concern at CHS and national trends that cause students to become disenfranchised from school. We have some work to do...Good and worthwhile work!
Need your help: As the semester unfolds it appears our students could use some reminders. Please continue to remind students that hats and hoods are to be worn outside only and are not permitted in the building. Also food is to be consumed in designated eating areas only: Cafeteria, South Commons and classrooms with kitchens. There are still students wondering the hallways aimlessly without hall passes. Students must have a hall pass in order to be out of class (One or two students at a time, please). In order for these policies to be followed it is critical that we are consistent with our expectations and follow through. It is frustrating and disheartening for those who are trying to promote and enforce these expectations when others are not taking them seriously or dismissing them all together. Consistency helps to promote connectedness. Your support and cooperation is appreciated by all.
Upcoming Events: Did you know...
"Research on notetaking indicates that taking notes in class and reviewing those notes (either in class or afterward) have a positive impact on student learning. Not surprisingly, students who take notes score higher on both immediate and delayed tests of recall and synthesis than students who do not take notes (Kiewra et al., 1991). Moreover, the more students record, the more they remember and the better they perform on exams (Johnstone & Su, 1994).
This month Trish Roach will be offering a special Strategy of the Month (SOM) session on Cornell Notetaking. Here's what Trish says about January's SOM:
The Cornell Notetaking method, which I will highlight, provides a structured way for students to take notes and then engage with the content in a meaningful way. So, it doesn't take time away from academic content - it provides a way for teachers to help students understand their content on a deeper level. But, teachers have to explicitly teach this method and support its use by students.
Hope you will join us for SOM on January 31 in the Panther Cafe at 2:30PM .
