Post Spring Break Post

Celebrating Success
I hope you all had a wonderful and rejuvenating spring break. Welcome back!
As you might remember, just before break we held our annual Spring Open House and Academic Fair.  While the parent turnout for this event was meager at best, the teacher turn out was awesome.  Thank you everyone for being there and proudly displaying all the great things you do at CHS.  In keeping with the theme of monitoring and adjusting, this is one of those events that we will consider taking off our plate for next year.

Congratulations to our Boys Baseball teams, Girls Softball, Track and Tennis for a strong start to spring sports. Our baseball team won every game they played over the break, and they played their share. The lady Panther softball team is on a winning streak as well. Way to go Panthers!
This week we play FHS beginning on Tuesday at home at 3:30PM. Hope you can come on out and cheer them on.

Congratulations are also in order for our Coconuts Robotics team.  Our Robot throws a frisbee like no other. Over the break our team competed in the First Robotics League Regional tournament and  once again, we came home with the highest honor, the Chairman's Award. Our Coconuts move on to the World Championships in St Louis at the end of April...go Nuts!!!

This Week
On Wednesday, March 27 we have a long over due faculty meeting beginning promptly at 1:30PM in the mini-theater. The main topic of our meeting will be our CHS Emergency Response Plan.  Ed and I are working on a video for you to view before the meeting. I will e-mail you all with the link tomorrow 3/25.  A special "Final Stretch" lunch will be provided by the Paul and Jim crew prior to the meeting.  Lunch will be served starting at 1:00 PM in the cafeteria.

March 11-15, 2013

Celebrating Success
A big thank you to everyone for helping with registration on Thursday.  All in all it went pretty smoothly thanks to everyone chipping in.  The next step is for the counselors to input the course selections into Synergy. In order to enter all 1200 student's selections in a timely manner the counselors will need some uninterrupted time.  We will likely close the counseling office this Thursday and Friday to allow for this process to take place.

The nomination process for Links Leaders went really well also.  CHS teachers recommended nearly 300 students for the program. One student had eight nominations (More than any other student in the ten year history of Links at CHS). Our current Links Leader have done a great job establishing relationships with the freshmen class.  They also do a lot of behind the scenes work to foster a positive school climate and inspire each other to be strong role models and promote positive school leadership.  A special thank you to Theresa Freas and Krista Dobosh for all you do and for helping these students to build confidence in themselves and our school.

Finally, thank you all for your focused attention during the Common Core training on Wednesday. I received a phone call from one of the trainers who was very complimentary of the CHS Faculty and said how much she appreciated your work and contributions in the training. The remaining trainings are scheduled for April 3, April 17 and May 1.

PLCs
This week each Collaborative Team will be working independently on team goals. All of the teachers who were at S3 workshop last week will attend Common Core at MEMS 1:00-3:45 room 200.

Celebrating Success
AIMS
Borrowing words from Ben Proctor...We can all be very proud of Coconino and our students for their hard work and focus on AIMS last week. A special thank you to everyone involved in the whole test taking process for helping to unsure everything went smoothly and with as few disruptions as possible. Thank you to every teacher at CHS for helping to prepare our students, for being flexible and understanding,  for giving up rooms and for encouraging our students to take the test seriously and do their very best. A special thank you to Barett Trittle for taking this on. You rock!

AIMS make up days are Monday 3/4 and Tuesday 3/5.

Registration for SY 2013-14
It is hard to believe that it 's already time for students to register for next year. The counselors and Cris have been working hard to re-write the course catalogue and refine the registration forms and process. Students will receive registration forms tomorrow, March 4,  during their English classes. Mon, Tues and Wed students will obtain required signatures, and recommendations for A.P. courses etc. The course catalog is available on the Homepage of the CHS Website and parents have been notified. All current Freshmen, Sophomore and Junior students will register Thursday, March 7 during the extended ASP time.  Please read e-mail sent from Cris Ray on Friday 3/1.

What's Up Wednesday?
Wednesday, March 6 is the first of a series of four trainings for phase I of the Common Core Standards. The session will begin at 1:00PM and go until 3:45PM.  Because the time extends beyond the contracted day,  teachers have the choice of claiming 301 menu hours (If still needed) or additional compensation of $27.11 for the extra hour.  This workshop will be held in Janet Chavez' room.
Who should attend? Everyone...unless you have already attended Phase 1, Common Core training, in which case you would have already been notified. Please note that 100% of  secondary teachers and administrators must be Phase1 Common Core "trained" by the end of summer 2013. If you have signed up for training outside of the school day and have not been included in the correspondance from me, please let me know.

F.U.S.D Calendar and Snow-days
Please note that We will have school on April 26, 29, and May 3. There are still three make up days left: May 13, 17, and 20.  See the updated FUSD calendar on the CHS Homepage.

Science Night
Tuesday, March 5 CHS in partnership with the the NAU society of Hispanic Professionals in Engineering and Science is hosting a family night of science, engineering, food and fun.  The fun begins at 6:00PM in the South Commons.

FYI
This Wednesday 3/6 is the end of the third quarter grading period. This date is different than the grading period schedule given out at the beginning of the year, but it is indeed the correct date. I apologize for the confusion and not notifying you of this change sooner.

.
Spring Open House and Academic Fair
March 14 at 5:30 PM. this is our chance to shine and show off all the great classes, students, teachers, projects, programs and pride here at CHS. Tables will be set up in the cafeteria for displays and exhibits.  The best spokes people for our school are our students. Please try to solicit students to help at your tables and represent your classes.

Looking ahead, way ahead
Just want to give you a heads up about a large summer project. All classrooms at CHS are slated to be re-carpeted  This means that pre-summer room prep will require a little extra attention. Bondo will be sending out specifics as the time gets closer.
