Celebrating Success
How bout those softball players?...winning on the field and in the classroom. So proud of our girls. In case you missed it, here is the e-mail from Eric Freas- "I want to publicly congratulate the Varsity Softball team. With the last eligibility check coming out today, they have gone the entire season WITHOUT a single girl on the ineligible list for grades! Very nicely done. If you have varsity softball players in your classes, please let them to know, we are extremely proud of their accomplishments as a team!!"
Also, this just in...We are breaking all kinds of records. This weekend CHS students placed first, second and third at the city wide Jim Simmerman Poetry Contest. 1st place ~ Brenna Vanderheyden, 2nd place ~ Brianne Panico and 3rd place ~ Leah Weinzinger. CONGRATULATIONS!
LINKSCrew Film Festival ~ The first annual PBIS Film Festival was a great success. A special thank you to our Link Leaders and Sponsors for creating the videos and sharing them with us. Thank you to all the teachers who attended and provided feedback!
Proud to be a Panther!
FYI
Although we are following a regular bell schedule this week, we have numerous scheduling and testing related events that will require your cooperation and continued patience and understanding, Oh and flexibility...Please read carefully.
Course request/registration for SY 2015-16
April 29 and 30 are course request make up days for all students who have not yet been to the computer lab to request classes on-line. English teachers, please allow any student who was absent on registration day to come down to the library to complete the course request process on April 29th or April 30th.
*Please note, we will not be making an announcement. Following role call, teachers should check in with their classes and send students who did not register on-line to the library. Remember this is only for the students who were absent during the registration course request day.
ACT
All juniors who missed the pre-registration for ACTs must go to the cafeteria on Monday, 4/27 at the beginning of 2nd period to complete ACT pre-registration. All juniors will be taking the ACT exams this Tuesday, April 28 in the large gym. Students should go directly to the gym upon arrival to school. Please note that because the test is 3 hours long, ALL juniors will have 2nd lunch on Tuesday.
AZMerit
We have about 120 students who have not taken the AZMerit. Even though we are in a "held harmless" year and test scores will not be used for our school profile, or grade, the only accountability rule is that we must show a 95% rate for students taking the test. We will have an AzMerit make-up day on Friday, May 1. (Details forthcoming vis email)
AP Teachers only ~ AP Registration
All students who are planning to take an AP Exam must complete a test packet to be eligible to sit for the exam. Carrie Johnson has sent a list of students who plan to test to AP teachers. It is really important that AP teachers send these students to Carrie's office on Wed. 4/29 or Thurs.4/30, during your AP class period. Some have more than one AP test; they only need to pre-register once. Students absent on 4/29 and or 30 will be called on Friday, 5/1.
301 Vote
Don't forget to vote on next year's 301 proposed calendar. FUSD will be unable to proceed with the plan until 70% of 301-eligible faculty have voted.
Tech Peer Coaching
Heather Zigler has asked principals to encourage teachers to apply to be trained and equipped to become Technology Peer Coaches. You can contact Heather at 6129 for more information.
Essential Learning Outcomes (ELOs)
If you pause and think about CHS you'll see as I do, that our school is comprised of lots of very smart people, with lots of expertise. It is truly an exciting and stimulating community to belong, and especially exciting when this collective wisdom comes together to make decisions about how we can share knowledge, expertise and wisdom with our students. This is what happens in CTs. Our recent work to identify and agree on ELOs for each subject is one of many pieces of the complex puzzle known as teaching. Our students reap the benefits of this work and your efforts. Thank you all for spending the time to examine standards, scope and sequence and general curriculum to narrow down on the ELOs. I hope you found this task to be meaningful and worthwhile. Cris and I had a chance to read all of the ELOs and we learned a great deal about what students are expected to know and be able to do while at CHS. We will return your documents with our feedback and we look forward to the continued journey together in our quest to be the best school we can possibly be.

Update ~ April 20-25, 2015
Celebrating Success
We have some serious celebrating to do this month. What a truly amazing faculty, staff and group of students we have. We not only made it through almost an entire month of mixed up schedules due to AzMerit, but had great attitudes throughout the process. This was due in large part to your willingness to go with the flow and make the best of it. Thank you all!
I think it is safe to say that this month CHS lived up to our vision of being a vibrant school community. In the month of April alone we held; School-Wide testing, STEM Night, 8th Grade Visitation, Spring Open House, Spotlight on Success Faculty Meeting and Luncheon, registration for 1480 students, Robotics going to World Championships, Band and Orchestra earned yet another superior with distinction, Disney and Desserts Choir performance, Theater performance of 12 Angry Jurors and S3 presented to the school board. We had numerous highly productive meetings including; PBIS, PLCs, Master Board and Department Chair. Not to mention that several CHS teachers earned independent grants and recognitions. Our Baseball, Softball, Track & Field, Sand Volleyball, Tennis and JROTC Teams keep pressing on with outstanding records this season. What a month, and it's not over yet...
Oh, and have you seen the beautiful new Panther directional signs throughout the building? A special thank you to Keith Nicolson and his students for creating these signs for our hallways.

All juniors are required to pre-register for the upcoming ACTs. Pre-registration will take place in the large gym on Thursday, April 23 during Pathways. Students who are unable to be there on 4/23 should go to the counseling office to sign up for the make-up pre-registration day (4/27).
PLCs
As we begin our gradual decent to the end of the year, it is time to reflect on our year and begin making plans for next. In lieu of a satisfaction survey regarding PLCs this year, I am asking for your input on an 18 point plan Critical Issues Analysis for effective school wide collaboration. Please take a few minutes in your CTs to complete this analysis. Each teacher should complete an individual analysis, but a CT discussion about the 18 points and any other additional thoughts are welcomed. The PLC committee will review your feedback to help develop our PLC plan for next year. Thank you in advance for your input. Click here to complete the analysis.
Planning ahead
Please mark your calendars for the May 5 prep hour meetings (Since this is cinco de Mayo, there will be a special surprise awaiting). Topics to be covered will include CSAs and End of Year procedures. There will also be a final New Teacher meeting on May 13 at 2:45pm.

Celebrating Success
Thank you all for sharing your many successes last week during our Spotlight on Success gathering. We have so much to be proud of...Panther Strong indeed.
More good news...
Assessments
I usually don't like to say hang in there, because the implication is that something unpleasant is occurring, but I just have to say hang in there, four more days of AZMerit. I know the past two weeks have not been easy for most. Interestingly the feedback has been mixed; some teachers have shared that they really like the 110 minute periods along with the 110 minute prep periods, while others wish never to repeat this testing format again. We will consider all feedback as we plan for next year. * Structures committee this will be another item of discussion at our next meeting. Date and time TBA soon.
Next up AIMS Science. (The only remaining piece of AIMS)

Power of Your Presence
As we approach the final weeks of the school year, teacher visibility is extremely helpful in keeping our hallways safe and positive. Thank you to the many teachers who are in the hallways and at doorways during passing periods. Your presence is powerful. Being visible is very helpful in thwarting undesirable behavior on and about campus. Your continued help is greatly appreciated!
Attendance
Please take time during Pathway Study Halls to talk to students about their attendance. Ask students to pull up StudentVue to check the number of absences for second semester. Students who have ten or more absences in any class are on Attendance Probation and should have received a letter home with this information. Please remind students that if they are on attendance probation they will need to write and submit an appeals letter on or before May 15. Side note...This conversation might need to include a vocabulary lesson about what "appeal" means. Thank you!
