Update ~ February 26-March 2, 2018

DELIBERATE PAUSE...
Very little about what I am including in this Panther Report are my own words, other than to say I can't seem to get over the sadness about the tragic event on February 14 at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, and I sencerly hope somthing changes...
I share the sentiments expressed by our superintenedent, Mike Penca

With Sadness and Hope...
FUSD Staff,
I join you in sadness for the events occurring this week at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, FL, and share your concern for these occurrences becoming too commonplace in schools, malls, movie theaters and concerts across our country. I understand the staff, students and parents of the Flagstaff Unified School District and our community have experienced firsthand the feelings of fear and disruption caused by threats to our schools in recent years. We will continue to refine our procedures to prevent, prepare for, and respond to all types of threats and hazards.

Additionally, we will reaffirm our commitment to ensure our district’s schools are filled with peace, acceptance, inclusivity, compassion, equity and love. Today I had the great privilege of attending the performance of The Mitten by 1st grade students at Sechrist Elementary. This performance filled my heart and gave me great hope for a better future.

Build Realtionships...
And an excerpt from a note from Phoenix Union High school district via Angela Buzan
Why building relationships is important. At a recent safety meeting, a group of Phoenix Union High School District School Resource Officers (SRO’s) responded to a question about how to keep our campuses more safe by saying, “One of the best ways to keep your campus safe is to build and maintain good relationships with your students. When you know your students and your students trust you, they will share information and confide in you for the benefit of the greater good.”

Preparing for and responding to school walkout demonstrations...
From the US Department of Education
"U.S. history has a strong heritage of walkout demonstrations—from labor protests at the turn of the 20th century to civil rights demonstrations in the 1960s to war protests in the 1970s. The exodus en masse of individuals from a cohesive group for another organized purpose is a familiar concept in times of controversy and discord. This form of expression by any group is often stirring, sometimes effective, and always disruptive. Even more unsettling is when the group walking out is youth—and the place they are walking out of is school."

Should we be concerned about a walkout at CHS?...
We are anticpating that some of our students will be joining the national school walkout on March 14. CHS admin and SRO will be meeting with a group of students this week to see if we might be able to organize an alternative to the walkout and if not, how we can work together to ensure everyone's safety on March 14.  I will share information with you all as we learn more.
We have a scheduled faculty meeting for Tuesday, February 27. The purpose of the meeting is to review several mandaoty topics, but we will plan to stay after the meeting for anyone who would like to discuss our school and district's emergency preparedness plans.

This week on March 1 at 9:40am CHS will be hosting guest speaker, Logan Weber. This event is a school-wide assembly focused on the Power of Words in Relationships. The assembly will be held in the large gym.

Update ~ February 12-16, 2018

CELEBRATING SUCCESS...
Weekend Round-Up...
Two of our amazing and talented CHS students were shining stars at this weekend's Regional Poetry Out Loud state qualifying competition. The first and second place honors went to CHS students Sophie Weinzinger and Sarah Norris.  They move on to the state competition on March 3 in Phoenix.
Congratulations to Sophie and Sarah and their teachers!
Also, this weekend, the opening reception for the CHS art exhibit attracted many art admirers. The art on display at Brandy's is beautiful and brings pride and honor to our school.  (Exhibit remains on display through March 3).  Congratulations to our talented art students and their teachers.
And in sports...
Although the end result of the big basketball game on Friday, was not as we had hoped, I know you all join me in recognizing the outstanding season and hard work of our boy's basketball team this year. Our student section was bursting at the seems and their enthusiasm and behavior was exemplary. Congratulations to our Panthers and their coaches.
The Girls play Tuesday night in the first round of the state finals.  Hope you can come out and help cheer them on.
On the mat...
Two of our CHS wrestlers made to the podium at the state wrestling meet this weekend. Pedro Billups for the silver medal and Brandon Barreras took sixth.  Congratulations to these individuals, the team and their coaches!
Go Panthers!
More good news...
Our very own, Christine Sapio has been named a finalist for the 2018 Viola Award Finalist for Excellence in Science Education. Click here to read more.
Congratulations Christine!

HIGHLIGHTS FROM CTE...
This year two teams from our CHS Architectural Interior Design Class will be participating in the FCCLA state leadership conference in March. Our students will present their comprehensive designs for Craftsman Style Bungalow to a panel of judges. Students who complete this program are eligible to become a certified apprentice for a chief architect.  Best of luck and Go Panthers!

WHAT'S UP NEXT...
As we work to maintain focus on academic achievement, we know things like social, emotional and behavior also demands our attention.  As we learned from Chris Gunn, last month, students are experiencing more trauma and facing extreme difficulties outside of school. The purpose of the workshop a couple of weeks ago was to deepen our awareness of the problems and offer suggestions on ways to talk with students who might possibly be facing these difficulties.  To continue to broaden our professional knowledge and to learn about the laws related to special education in school, this week we will have another guest speaker at our faculty meeting. This time the speaker, Attorney Cathleen Dooley, will focus on Special Education Law as it relates to students with Individual Education Plans (IEPs).
Faculty Meeting ~ Wednesday, February 14 2:00-3:00 pm in the mini-theater.

AND LOOKING AHEAD...
Next week, on Wednesday, February 21 we have 8th Grade Visitation.  Our CHS students will dismiss at 11:00am on 2/21.  8th-grade students will arrive between 10:30 and 10:45am  and begin their visit with a short Band and Orchestra Concert. Following the concert, the 8th graders will eat lunch in the cafeteria and then our LINK Leaders will host guided tours around CHS to showcase the many programs and classes available at CHS.
That same night, 2/21 the showcase continues with our Spring Open House. The open house is primarily for incoming 9th-grade families, but all grade levels are welcome to attend.
