We made it...It is hard to believe this is the last Panther Report for 2016, but indeed it is. On behalf of Cris, Steve and I, thank you for a great semester, for your hard work, dedication and commitment to our students and to our school. Our best to you all this week as we wrap up the semester and our warmest wishes for a healthy, happy and safe holiday season.
CELEBRATING SUCCESS
One of our goals this year is to reduce the number of students on attendance probation, and I can happily say we're on our way. Although the number of students with "Chronic Illness " documentation has increased, our total number of students on probation has decreased.
A special thank you to Tina Burrell and the entire attendance committee for devoting many hours throughout the semester to communicate the message of the importance of attendance, keeping a close watch on the numbers, and at the final hour reading the numerous appeal letters. The process is time consuming and the decision as to whether the students in question should earn credit is taken very seriously and not an easy one.
Students will be notified this week regarding their appeals.
FINALS

WHAT ABOUT STUDENTS WITH IEPs?...
Please check in Synergy to see whether or not students with IEPs in your classes require testing accommodations. Even if we do not agree that the student should have any accommodations, the IEP trumps our own feelings about this. If we ignore this piece during testing, the test could be determined invalid and we will have to offer the student the chance to retake the exam. If you are unsure how to search for this information, or what the "accommodations" mean, please check with the student's case manager, or with Dana so she can direct you to the case manager. Thank you in advance for your cooperation!
WHAT ELSE...
That's a wrap! Have a great week and enjoy the break. See you all back here on Tuesday, January 3!
We'll see you back here on January 3, 2017

Update ~ December 5-9, 2016
CELEBRATING SUCCESS
The A+ application process has given us an opportunity to reflect on all the amazing things happening at CHS, we have a lot to be proud of. Once the very loooooong application document is complete we will share it with everyone. Thank you to all who have helped thus far, we are about 1/2 way done, our goal is to be completely finished by December 16, as you know CHS is an ambitious crew.

How quickly this semester has gone. It's just about time to say "That's a wrap..." This is our last full week of instruction before mid-terms, or finals for some. Remember students dismiss at 11:00am Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, December 14, 15 and 16.
WHAT ELSE...
We have a faculty meeting after school on Tuesday, December 6 at 2:45pm. This is a Sit and Get style meeting so you can relax and be reminded, or hear for the first time, information about Child Find, School Health Precautions (Blood Borne Pathogens), CHS Transition Program and end of the semester details.
Holiday Party ~ December 11, 4:00pm, hosted by Steve, Cris and I. Dana is making some of her famous and most delicious appetizers and Becky is in charge of dessert. Adult beverages will also be provided. We hope you can join us for a little holiday cheer. RSVP to Becky by Wednesday, December 7.

Update ~ November 21 & 22, 2016
CELEBRATING SUCCESS
This week I had the opportunity to attend several "College Signing" celebrations and end of the season banquets. These are the outside of the classroom events, where our students shine. Their many accomplishments are truly cause for celebration. Knowing our students are prepared for the next steps in life speaks to a job well done. During each of the events the students made sure they thanked their teachers. Never doubt you make a difference every day!
TIS THE SEASON...For classroom observations
It is a joy to be in your classrooms observing teaching and learning. If you have not connected with your evaluator to select a week and convenient day for your formal observation please do asap. Also please read the TPEC rubric prior to your formal observation. There are several categories that require additional information from the teacher in order for us to be able to complete the evaluation. These categories include: Lesson Plan, Technology Integration (if not visible during observation), Assessing Learning and Communication Results, Team Responsibilities and Professional Development. Below I have included the descriptor for the Assessing Learning Category. If you are unsure about how to access the rubric or have questions, please see your evaluator.
TPEC Rubric ~ Assessing Learning and Communicating Results
SAFETY FIRST
We will practice a Shelter in Place Response this Tuesday, November 22 at the beginning of 7th period.
Please read the procedural steps below with your students before the drill on Tuesday. Also be sure you are able to locate your red emergency folder and include this information in your sub plans.
Shelter in Place
1. Shelter in place means the threat/hazard is outside. All outside doors are secured.
2. When the "Shelter in place" announcement is made, classroom doors should be closed, they do not need to be locked, but if your door is already locked, it is okay to leave it that way. No use of cell phones or electronic devices during the drill. This is an important point to emphasize with your students prior to the drill.
3. Students remain in the classroom as teachers continue to teach class as usual. If the passing bell were to ring, students remain in the current classroom until the "all clear" is given. Any classes outside must return to the building and remain inside until the all clear.
4. Students should not leave the classroom during a shelter in place. If restroom use is, or any other emergency arises, administration should be contacted.
The purpose of the shelter in place drill is to practice procedure and be as prepared as possible should there be a true threat to the safety of our school. This drill should last only about ten minutes.
Thank you in advance for your cooperation.
THANKSGIVING ON DECK
On my list of the things I am grateful for during thanksgiving grace, will be CHS and all of you. I am grateful for your willingness to do what needs to be done to make a difference in the lives of our students and for all that you do. Cheers to a wonderful thanksgiving holiday full of love and joy-Happy Thanksgiving!

Congratulations for this well deserved recognition!
SAD HEART...
I have heard from a few of you about negative comments made from and toward some of our CHS Students. Hurtful and hateful comments are not acceptable and will not be tolerated at CHS. If you happen to overhear someone making racists remarks, or if students are telling you that they are hearing these negative comments, please ask for names and send the names to Greg or to the CHS administration. In the meantime reassure our students that they belong here and all students are respected and cared for at CHS. We are all part of the CHS Family. Students take cues from the adults in their lives, right now it seems our students could use some positive influences. I am reassured to know you will continue to be that positive influence. This is a good time to remind students about our CHS guiding principles - RESPECT-RESPONSIBILITY-INTEGRITY!
Thank you!
More sad news...
This weekend our colleague, George Nenes, lost his wife. Gayle had been battling cancer for some time. George and his wife also have two grandchildren at CHS. Our thoughts and prayers are with George and his family. We will keep you all informed as meals and the service information comes our way.

Update ~ November 7-11, 2016
CELEBRATING SUCCESS...
How about Lilly Rojas-Powers?...Lilly received her acceptance letter to Annapolis on Friday. As Colonel Morris says "Hu-ah" and as Lilly will be saying from now on "Go Army-Beat Navy." and as we say here at CHS "Panther Strong." So proud of this wonderful young lady!
WHAT PEOPLE ARE TALKING ABOUT...
The Coconino High School Cross Country Team, Woo Hooo! Congratulations to coach Andrew Benford and the entire cross country team. Both Boys and Girls Teams made it to state and the girls ran strong and took second place in the state championship on Saturday. So proud of our student athletes.
BEHIND THE SCENES...
Each year a group of students come together to form the CHS LINKS Crew, and each year they do great things. This year in particular the LINKS Crew is truly an extraordinary group of students. Their most recent lesson developed for our freshmen centered around adversity and resiliency. The LINKS Crew created a video to share with their freshmen mentees and I thought you all might enjoy it too. Click here for the LINKS Crew video.
*Successes happen all around us every day...please share your successes with me so I can share them in Panther Report. These can be from your own classrooms, things you see or know about other classrooms, teachers, students etc., really anything worthy of celebration related to CHS.
TARDY BELL...
There seems to be a high volume of e-mails of late, asking for forgiveness for students who are finishing up late and arriving tardy to their next class. As innocent as this may seem, it is causing angst amongst our faculty. Please release students on time. Thank you!
INDIGENOUS YOUTH AND EDUCATION...
On Wednesday, November 16 from 5:30-8:30pm there will be a Town Hall meeting with a focus on indigenous youth education. The Town Hall will take place at FHS.
AND THE BEAT GOES ON...
This week we have prep hour meetings on Wednesday, November 9. The meetings will take place in the back lab in the library. The focus for these meetings will be Synergy Assessments.
FRONT OFFICE NEWS...
Our amazing receptionist, Sabrena, was recently offered a job she couldn't refuse, so she will no longer be working at CHS. The good news is we have hired another amazing person to take the receptionist position and join the best office team in Flagstaff. The new member to the Panther Family is Diane Guitierez. Diane brings a lot of clerical experience and a great professional demeanor and will officially begin on November 14.
GRATEFUL...
I am taking the liberty here to borrow some of Russ Randall's words...
As we approach Veteran's Day, on behalf of the CHS Community, I would like to thank the veteran's of our CHS Community for your service to our country. Thank you for stepping forward and placing yourselves between us a danger. Thank you also to your parents, spouses, siblings, children and friends for their sacrifices, love and prayers during your service. Thank you for using the skills you learned during your tour of duty to help our community and nation become stronger upon your return. Thank you for making the world a better place. We are truly grateful.
DATES TO REMEMBER...
11/9 ~ Prep hour meetings
11/9 & 10 ~ Greg Reiff will be joining me for the Drug Impairment for Education Professionals training. We will both be out of the building Wednesday & Thursday. The RTR will be monitored by Jim Popham during Greg's absence.

Update ~ October 31-November 4, 2016
CELEBRATING SUCCESS
We made it through homecoming, fall break, spirit week and all the accompanying activities seemingly unscathed, thank you all for helping make CHS a vibrant school community!
Congratulations to all of our fall athletes and coaches for a great, hard fought, fall sports season. A special shout out to our Panther Volleyball team headed to the state playoffs this week and to our girls x-country team who won the region championship on Friday. Both boys and girls x-country teams are also headed to the state championship. Go Panthers! Panther Strong!
Thank you all for your contributions to our A+ School of Excellence application. We have a lot to be proud of. We will be reviewing and consolidating all of the information from Wednesday's brainstorming activity and sending the information to the A+ Draft 1 team by November 7.
SCHOOL SAFETY
We have fire drills down! Our entire building was evacuated and to the appropriate evacuation areas within three minutes of the sounding of the fire alarm. Thank you all for taking care to know and follow this important safety procedure. Our next safety drill will be a Shelter in Place drill on Tuesday, November 22 around 1:30pm. Please review the procedure provided in your red emergency folder and be sure to leave these instructions in your sub folders as well.
SPECIAL GUEST THIS WEEK
Tuesday, November 1, CHS will be hosting Arizona Representative Bob Thorpe as part of the Arizona Education Foundation's "Take your Legislator to School Day (TYLTS)." The visit is part of an ongoing relationship developed by Christine Sapio and Rep. Thorpe, beginning in 2014. The goal of TYLTS is to get our policy makers in our schools and classrooms so they can make informed decisions regarding education policy. Rep. Thorpe will visit with US History and Government classes, Student Council, senior English and CIT.
HOT TOPICS...
It is exciting and encouraging to hear lots of conversation at school about the upcoming election. As a school entity we can facilitate discussion, debates, moc-elections etc., just take care to withhold your personal political views and presidential candidate choice. Being a teacher is a powerful position and unfortunately, when we share our political views some people perceive this a an attempt to persuade the malleable minds of our students.
SPEAKING OF HOT TOPICs...
What's the latest with the CHS Dress Code? The Solutions Team met a couple of weeks ago to discuss the latest fashion trend, holy jeans. The team came to a consensus that we should interpret the "No large holes" verbiage of the current dress code to mean "No large holes when the holes are in the 'No No Square', meaning anywhere in the anterior or posterior pelvic region." In other words the whole should not expose the skin high above the knees, but holes at the knees are okay.
And then there's Halloween...I used to like Halloween, not so much anymore, especially when it falls on a week day. Students are permitted to wear a costume to school, however the only head accouterments that will be permitted are animal ears and such, that are part of the costume. Head-coverings such as ball caps, cowboy hats, stocking caps, bandanas etc., will not be permitted. Full face paint and masks are also not allowed. Grrrrrr!
DATES TO REMEMBER
11/1 ~ PBIS Meeting
11/2 ~ LINK Leader Freshmen Connection during second period
Looks like a quiet week at CHS :)
Press on! Panther Strong!

Update ~ October 24-28, 2016
CELEBRATING SUCCESS
AND BEAUTY AT CHS
Nizhoni means beautiful in Navajo. This weekend our CHS Native American club held the first annual Miss Native American CHS. Nizhoni indeed. The pageant was beautifully organized and all eleven contestants represented their families, their culture, their heritage and Coconino High School with pride, grace and poise. The beautiful evening highlighted knowledge, language, culture community and traditions. It was a very moving event and I couldn't be more proud of our Native American Club Students, sponsors and all eleven contestants. A special congratulations to Cheyenne Tso, our 2016 Miss Native American CHS.

I LOVE U GUYS . ORG...
True story. The i Love U Guys foundation focuses on the area of school safety around the country. For the past five years, FUSD has used the guidelines provided by the foundation to develop and implement school safety and emergency plans. It is recommended that we hold safety practices and evacuation drills at least one time per month. We are a little behind, but wanted you to know that we will have our first fire drill this Thursday, October 27 around 9:00am. We have also planned a Shelter in Place drill for Tuesday, November 22 at around 1:30pm. Obviously these are announced drills, later in the school year we will also have unannounced drills. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation. If you are in need of bedtime reading check out the i love U guys website by clicking here.
LET'S DANCE
It's not too late to join in for the Flash mob. I really think our kids would love to see everyone out there, so please consider joining us. If learning a dance routine seems intimidating, just know Erin Motes is a great instructor, and even if you don't know all the steps you can fake it and no one would know. If that still seems intimidating or uncomfortable, there is a part at the very end that all you have to do is join us on the dance floor (aka gym floor) and clap your hands over your head. Below are the dance practice times. You do not need to be there for every practice in order to participate.
Monday 7th period in the mini-theater and 2:30pm back stage main auditorium
Wednesday during combined lunch and 2:30pm back stage main auditorium
Thursday 2:30pm back stage main auditorium
Please keep an eye out for an email from Donna Lyons about this year's College Fair
