Final Panther Report of the 2017-18 School Year

The late Richard Dufour asserts that the educators in our schools today are the “greatest generation” of educators our nation has ever seen.  We know first-hand at Coconino High school, that this is the absolute truth.

It is difficult to find words to properly say goodbye to our CHS teachers who are retiring and moving on to the next chapter in their lives. These teachers have given many years of service to teach and change lives and they are the reason for calling this generation the greatest generation of educators our nation has ever seen.  On behalf of everyone at CHS we wish you all the very best.

SAYING GOODBYE IS NEVER EASY...
First to Cris...
Oh, Cris (actually Crys), I will miss you, we will miss you!
Working side by side with Crys has been an honor and a privilege.  I know she will tackle her new position in Scottsdale with the same passion and dedication she gave to Coconino High School over the past twenty-one years. CHS is is a special place and Crys' influence and inspiration has been a huge part in where our school is today.  We will all miss working with Crys each day and wish her all the best as she moves into her new role as a middle school assistant principal in the valley.
Thank you, Crys!

GOODBYE TO OUR RETIRING TEACHERS...

Leah Casados has been superstar math teacher for over thirty years.

Julie Vlieg has sparked the passion for science in her classroom for over thirty years.

Tim Quigly while teaching for nearly thirty years he also gained the reputation as the "best welder" in Flagstaff.

Jim Popham has been the behind the scenes hero for countless students for over thirty years.

Jim Vail leaves a legacy of high standards in the science classroom and helping all students rise to the occasion of meeting those standards.

Keith Nicolson will be joining Smart Schools but will remain teaching and sharing his unlimited expertise in FUSD.

Tina Jacobs leaves her career as an amazing high school counselor to spend time with her family and her soon to be new grandbaby.

A FOND FAREWELL TO OUR FACULTY AND STAFF WHO ARE MOVING TO NEW PLACES...

Laura Rosensweet
Daniel Richards
Kristina Hover
Loreal Scott
Aarin Klovenas
Casey Shove
Kira Blair
Bonnie McCormick

You will all be greatly missed and leave a void no one can fill. On behalf of all of your colleagues and students, I thank you for your years of service and making a difference in the lives of so many students.
P.S. We do have substitute packets at the ready by the front office 😊

IMPORTANT FINAL BUSINESS...
All teachers must have a completed observation and evaluation. Please log into TNL and make sure the following sections are complete:

  • The teacher opens and signs off on the Formal Observation Acknowledgement
  • The Formal Acknowledgment Observations should be checked two times unless the teacher and the evaluator have agreed on waiving the 2nd observations in which case there should be a digital acknowledgment of the waiver for the 2nd observation as well as a hard copy of the signed waiver.
If you have questions about this TNL process, please see your evaluator.

FYI...
Mr. Mike Penca has shared information to pass on to Faculty and Staff.  Please note that because the #RedforEd movement is now endorsing a bill to be placed on the ballot in November, it becomes a political matter and the following applies:

Arizona Law (A.R.S. § 15-511) prohibits a person acting on behalf of a school district from using or spending district “resources, including the use or expenditure of monies, accounts, credit, facilities, vehicles, postage, telecommunications, computer hardware and software, web pages, personnel, equipment, materials, buildings or any other thing of value of the school district . . . for the purpose of influencing the outcomes of elections”—i.e., communicating in any manner that is not impartial or neutral. The maximum penalty for a knowing violation of this law is $5,000 plus any amount of “misused funds” from the school district budget, and the person violating is personally responsible for the payment of all penalties and misused funds.

PROHIBITED ACTIVITIES –District personnel (administration/employees/volunteers) shall not:
• Spend or use district money, accounts, credit, equipment (including copiers, computers, printers, telephones, mailboxes, postage, web pages, newsletters, e-mail, etc.), staff or communication networks for influencing the outcome of the election.
• Use students as messengers of election information in any way.
• Use the authority of your position to influence the vote of any subordinate employee.
• Solicit contributions or circulate petitions.
• Place campaign signs, banners, stickers or any item of advocacy in/on district property.

This means all #RedfoEd signs in school buildings need to be removed and T-shirts with the #RedforEd message should not be worn by employees while at school or district facilities.

WHAT ELSE SHOULD WE KNOW?...
At the BOARD meeting on Tuesday, May 8, the FUSD Governing Board approved resolutions placing two voter-approved funding initiatives, a renewal of the current Maintenance and Operations Override and a Bond authorization, on the ballot for voters to consider on November 6, 2018. M&O Override funds are used to support excess costs associated with special education services, maintain staff and current class sizes, and support programs not fully funded or mandated by the state (full day kindergarten, extracurricular activities, and Art, Music, PE in elementary schools). The Bond authorization would fund maintenance and facility improvements including major renovation and replacement of aging schools, 1:1 technology for students and staff, and replacement of school buses. There are two informational meeting scheduled regarding the Bond Override Election:

Monday, May 21 at 3:45 p.m. (Mount Elden Middle School Rm. 100)
Friday, May 25 at 7:30 a.m. (Flagstaff High School Hurley Auditorium)

A CALL FOR STUDENTS...
FUSD Governing Board is working to create a Student Advisory Committee which represents each of FUSD high schools, to make sure student voices are being heard.  It is the boards hope that from the student body of each high school of the Flagstaff Unified School District, students who represent the school population in the diversity of age, ethnicity, culture, and areas of study will be recommended to serve on the Student Advisory Committee. We have been asked to select Four (4) students to serve on this advisory board. Please email me student recommendations.
Thank you in advance for your help.

POWER OF YOUR PRESENCE...
Thank you to all who joined me outside on Friday to welcome back our students.  Your smiles, enthusiasm, and honks from our returning students were exhilarating.
As we finish out the year, please remember to be visible in the hallways during passing periods.  Being visible contributes to creating and maintaining a positive school climate.  Teacher presence in the hallways can help change behavior.  When students see us in the hallways they often self-correct their behavior,  just because you are there.  For an added power play, say hi to everyone that you can. Thank you!
