Update ~ December 7-11, 2015

Celebrating Success
We really have some amazing students.  As we work together each and every day to create a vibrant school  community that exemplifies academic excellence and model citizenship, I thought I would share this quote that was at the end of an e-mail I received last week from a CHS teacher...

"And it is weird in all seriousness, My students this year end to end are as good as I have ever had. Amazing. Beyond a tardy, I have sent ZERO slips to RTR. None. Great kids."

And how about this email?
"We just dismissed from our trip down to Phoenix today and the band students handled themselves beautifully!  They received a Superior with Distinction (This is the highest score possible) at the festival and received many positive comments from the adjudicators on their performance, fundamentals, maturity, and musicality."
Congratulations to Jennifer Hamilton and the CHS Band, we are so proud!

Theres more...
From the Counseling Corner
On Dec. 3rd the counselors hosted "How to Pay for College Night." Presenters for the night included Lisa Gallegos from CCC/NAU Educational Opportunity Centers and Roxanne Dewyer from the NACRC.  Parents were extremely grateful and many commented on how helpful it was to hear about the financial aid process and details about applying for scholarships.  The next parent night will be January 21st where counselors will be available to assist students/families with filling out the FAFSA.

Congratulations to Donna Lyons and LaShia Scharfenberger for earning the distinction of "Arizona College Access Professionals".  They are two of 33 professionals in the state who have completed a series of modules to increase their knowledge of college and career readiness skills.  They, along with other FUSD participants will be recognized by Arizona College Access Network (AzCAN)  at the Dec. 8th FUSD Board Meeting.

Vibrant School Community, Oh yeah, that's what I'm talking about :)

Update ~ November 23,24

Celebrating Success
"I had to tear myself from the classroom; I was enjoying the lesson so much I didn't want to leave."  This was shared with me by one of our recent visitors.  My response was that  I often find myself feeling the same way -it is a great feeling.
Educational researcher Robert Marzano says "Among elements such as well articulated curriculum and safe and orderly environment the one factor that surfaces as the single most influential component of an effective school is the individual teachers within the school."  In keeping with the theme of Thanksgiving week, I am grateful for the wonderful and dedicated teachers at CHS. Keep up the great work everyone!

A special thank you to the CHS Social Committee and Paul Pavlich for the delicious lunch they provided on Wednesday.

Have you seen the gratitude Tree in the South Commons?  The members of the Legion of Kindness gave out paper leaves for all who wished to display their gratitude.  They gathered the leaves and created the brightly colored gratitude tree for all to see. I hope you find a few seconds to pause and read some of the comments, they are sure to warm your heart.  I have included a couple of my favorites in the photo of this week's Panther Report.

Re: Technology
Remember during your formal observation, if your students are not using technology, fear not, you can submit a narrative explaining how your students regularly use technology to enhance learning in your classes.

Questions
Following the AdvancedEd classroom observations, the evaluators told us that they were looking for the use of questions in the classrooms they visited.  They asked how our teachers are trained in using questioning strategies to engage students and promote thinking.  Hmmmmm? This question led to a discussion with our PLC committee (Three CHS teachers and two CHS administrators).  As part of the reflection about the use of questions during instruction, we decided we would propose a challenge to you all.
In the remaining few weeks of the semester, pick a day and see if you can go the entire day without asking a Yes/No question in class.  There is a prize for anyone who meets this challenge.  This contest is on the honor system, so you will need to monitor the questions yourself and let Cris or me know how you do.
If you are in need of some bedside reading during the thanksgiving break, you might like to re-read the article about using questioning to teach critical thinking, it's a little long, but it's very good.  Click here for the article.

CHS Hotline
We now have a phone Hotline for students to anonymously report  bullying, harassment and/or other criminal activity. You will see the posters on the bulletin boards around school.  The phone line is called the Panther Hotline and the phone number is 928-286-7285.  Thank you to Ed Veseley,  The S3 Team, The CHS Safety Committee, Ben Proctor, Dean Shaddy and students, Seth Deapen and Meghan Parris for all your work to develop the idea, open the line, design the eye catching posters and most importantly, helping to make CHS a safe and supportive school.

Looking ahead
12/18 CHS Holiday Party 4:00pm, pot luck format.   Invitations with more details will be out next week.

Update ~ November 16-20, 2015

CHS Accreditation Progress Report
A year ago, you may recall, CHS went through the accreditation process.  Following the accreditation review the external review team identified three priority improvement areas requiring action.  During our back to school meetings in August of this year, we reviewed the three goals and have been working on developing action aligned with the goals. In preparation for the external review team return visit today, Monday, November 16 ,  I am including the required action goals in this PantherReport to refresh your memory.  The team will spend time with CHS administration and teachers and will aslo be visitng classrroms.

Accreditation Priority Improvement Goals:
1.  Develop and implement a comprehensive evaluation process that includes well defined levels of performance in student learning, professional growth and job performance and a system designed to provide regular follow-up of targeted areas of growth for certified employees.

2.  Develop and implement professional development to support and deepen teacher understanding and use of strategies that incorporate individualized instruction to meet student needs and promote the integration of academic student interaction, self reflection and rigorous tasks and activities.

3.  Develop and implement a comprehensive plan to systematically train professional and support staff in the evaluation, interpretation and use of data.

This Week
Please note, we will not have prep houe meetings this week.  We have a faculty and staff luncheon on Wednesday, Nov 18 at 1:00pm. The next faculty meeting is schedueld for December 8, at 2:45pm.

Update ~ November 9-13, 2015

Celebrating Success
Congratulations to the counseling department for a very successful 2nd Annual College Application Campaign. All of our seniors had the opportunity to fill out a college application and most did. Representatives from NAU,  CCC and the NACRC were on hand to our CHS counseling department support the students through the application process. The students were able to have all of their questions answered and get the help they needed to click "Submit".

The students commented on how much fun it was to see the hallways decorated and they loved seeing the teachers get in to the door decorating.  Many said that completing a college application was not as daunting as it seemed and that if were not for this event, they may have continued to put off the process of applying to college or preparing their future.
Way to go Mrs. Locke and the entire interior design class. Also a shout out to the door decoration winners: 1st place- Mrs. Penny 2nd place- Mr. Begay 3rd place- Mr. Suby.
Thank you everyone for your enthusiasm and support for creating a college-going climate as CHS!

November 11
In honor of our country's veterans November 11 is Veteran's Day, a national holiday.  On behalf of everyone at CHS a special thank you to all of our veterans and current service men and women for their patriotism and willingness to serve and sacrifice on behalf of our country.

Looking Ahead
Monday, November 16 ~ AdvancedEd external review team returns to CHS for the required progress review.
Wednesday, November 18 ~ Faculty Luncheon 1:00pm
Friday, December 18 ~ CHS Holiday Party 4:00pm

Have a great week!

Update ~ November 2-6, 2015 Really???

Celebrating Success

Our students are amazing...
  • Recently, our CocoNuts Robotics Team was challenged by NAU professor Jut Wynne to prototype a robot to explore caves on Mars. The CocoNuts did background research, brought in guest speakers from USGS, and took a trip to the Lava Caves before settling on a hybrid design between a climbing robot and the Curiosity Drive Train. The CocoNuts then submitted a formal scientific abstract that was accepted and they were invited to present their design and 3D drawings of their concept to an audience of professors, college students from elite universities and engineers from NASA and the Jet Propulsion Lab. The CocoNuts presentation was so well received that they are now challenged with the task of transforming the concept to a true prototype for further research.
  • Our Cross Country Team ran strong in Holbrook at the sectional championship. The girls and boys both placed 4th to advance to the state championship.
  • Varsity Volleyball finished the season strong and the team is headed to the first round of the state championship on Tuesday.
  • Panther Football Teams worked hard all season and played strong to the end.
  • Marching Band continues to bring tons of school spirit and is preparing for the winter music competitions.
  • Numerous CHS students turned out last week to help pack over 380 shoe boxes for operation Christmas Child to provide for needy families in 3rd world countries.
  • Our cheer leaders continue to volunteer their time to support various community events and fundraising efforts.
Way to go Panthers, congratulations! (Please let me know of other successes and achievements to include in the Panther Report)

College Application Campaign

CHS has once again joined the National College Application Campaign. This Wednesday and Thursday, November 3 and 4, our seniors will be completing college applications.  The primary purpose of the campaign is to help seniors navigate and become comfortable with the complex college application process.  The students also benefit from the experience of completing an application and learning about post secondary options. By having students complete applications at school some of the barriers to college access begin to dissolve.  Although we know that 100% of CHS students do not plan to go to college, it is important for high school students to have postsecondary goals and to open doors for opportunities they may not have thought possible. College access is a major focus in our country right now and it is important for our students to know why. It is no secret that the economic health and viability of a democratic society is determined by the education of its citizens. I hope you will take a brief moment this week to talk to your students about their future goals and the importance of continuing education post high school, whatever that education might look like.  Thank you in advance for your support of this campaign.

Informal Walk Through Observations
Cris, Steve and I will continue to pop in and out of classrooms focusing this month on student engagement.  I thought you might like the "Written Conversation" active participation protocol to add to your repertoire of strategies.  Click here for the protocol.

 Informal Observations
As I mentioned in the Panther Report back in August, we are using the The Thoughtful Classroom Teacher Effectiveness framework to guide our informal walk-through observations.  Our focus for the next nine weeks will be  Presenting New Learning. The question, "How does the teacher present new learning and provide opportunities for students to actively engage in content?" will guide our walk-through observations for November and December.  We look forward to spending time in your classrooms as the semester continues.

Halloween
The good news is that Halloween falls on a Saturday this year. The additional good news is that it is spirit week at CHS and Friday is School Spirit day.  In spite of the good news,  we will inevitably have students who want to express their inner child and come dressed in their Halloween costumes on Friday. School dress code still applies; no full face paint, masks or head coverings of any kind will be permitted.  Thank you!

Update ~ October 12-14, 2015

Celebrating Success
It was great to return back to CHS after the RTI conference to lots of questions about what we learned about secondary interventions.  The strong message from the conference was about why the most effective form of intervention is prevention and what systems should be in place to ensure all students are learning at high levels. While at the conference, we had a chance to reflect on what we do have in place at CHS and look closely at areas that require us all to give more attention. There are questions we were asked to ponder and questions we will need to answer together about our school’s current reality, questions like; Does every adult who works in your building truly, sincerely and whole heartedly, believe that all students can learn at high levels, and if so, what are we doing in each and every classroom to ensure learning for all?  We were challenged not only to examine our Tier 2 and Tier 3 academic interventions but to also look closely and carefully at what we are doing in Tier 1.  Over the past few years we have spent a great deal of time developing a system of interventions for behavior and pieces of our academic intervention are beginning to fall into place too.  The key is to work together collectively to unite the attention to academic behaviors and social behaviors to ensure all students are learning at high levels.  I am very proud of what we have accomplished together and look forward to the next steps. Thank you for your passion and commitment to our students.  Stay tuned for more details soon…

Hope the LipDub brought a smile, click here to view the 2015 CHS Lip Dub
Congratulations to the CHS digital Media crew for this exceptional production!

Special Guests
On Tuesday, October 13th  CHS will have the honor of hosting another group of distinguished guests. Brent Neilson, the CAVIAT Superintendent, and Christine Meyer, the CAVIAT Regional Program Coordinator, several state legislators, our Flagstaff Mayor, along with FUSD dignitaries (about thirty people total) will be here to visit our Career and Technical Education Programs (CTE).

The group is expected to arrive at CHS around 12:15pm on Tuesday, October 14.  Please share a warm welcome should you see them on campus on Tuesday.

Faculty Meeting
Due to numerous conflicts, the scheduled faculty meeting for this Tuesday, October 13 has been changed to Wednesday, October 21 at 2:45pm. Please mark your calendars

Declaration
From this point on, we have lifted the ban on ear buds in the hallways.  We will no longer be asking students to remove their earbuds during transition times in the hallways. The original purpose for this rule was in response to a safety concern, however, after much reflection and conversation we do not believe that earbuds in the hallways pose a safety concern, therefore we have decided to make this change. This change does not affect the classroom electronic device policy, this revision is strictly regarding the wearing of earbuds, or headphones in the hallways. We will change our hallway expectation signs to reflect this revision.

Wednesday
October 15 is an adjusted schedule:
1    7:50-8:35
2    8:40-9:20
3    9:25-10:05
4/5 10:10--10:50
Lunch 10:50-11:20
6    11:25-12:05
7    12:10-12:50

Also, please note, 96 students will be taking the PSATs in the small gym beginning at 8:00am on Wednesday.  Students should come directly to the small gym when they arrive to school.  We will also make a reminder announcement.

Enjoy the short week and fall break ahead!

Celebrating Success
Thank you all for making the third annual College & Career Fair a huge success. A special thank you to Denise VanWoerkam and CHS Counselors for all the behind the scenes work to make this our best fair yet.  Over 50 colleges attended and our students were engaged and excited about the information they received.

United Way
It is time for the annual United Way fundraising Campaign. Becky Gonzales has graciously agreed to chair the campaign at CHS, once again.  United Way contributes a great deal of financial support for educational endeavors. You will find a donation form in your box this week and collections will take place through the month of October.

CHS Admin this week
Along with Mike Vogler and Ted Lyons, Cris and I will be attending a Secondary Intervention conference this week.  We are excited to bring back information to help guide interventions at CHS. We will be out of the building Monday through Thursday, back on Friday. Tadd will help Steve steer the ship and Greg Rieff will be in the RTR each period.

Counseling Corner
This week, counselors are going back into the classroom to start ECAP lessons with Heilman's 10th graders and Klovenas' 11th graders.  Our lessons will include determining career pathways, exploring programs of study and writing a resume.

Have a great week!

Celebrating Success
Bus Evac Drill, Math Parent Night, Photo Re-takes, Shelter in Place drill, College and Career Night, CHS VB win over NPA, Homecoming Week all topped off with big W against Goldwater High School.  And, if a win isn't enough, how 'bout the 2015 Panthers making history? Yup, Cristo Tobares' six touchdowns in one game makes the record books, and the final score 55-34 is the second highest scoring game in the history of CHS. Way to go Panthers!  The homecoming dance was a smashing success as well.  We really have so many wonderful students!
Whew! THANK YOU EVERYONE! It was a great week.
And, now back to business...

Dress code, oh Dress code
With Homecoming Spirit week on our heels, we will likely need some reminders to our students about appropriate attire at school.  Steve will make announcements all week to remind students about our dress code and any reminders you can fit in your daily routines would be greatly appreciated. Please use the MIF process should you have students who have been warned, but continue to be in violation of the dress code.

Update ~ Sept 21-25, 2015

Celebrating Success
As always, we have so many reasons to celebrate...I thought I would share this email I received from B. Hickman on Friday, 9/18.  I hope it makes your heart happy:

Dear Ms Hickman,
I am a parent of a Cactus Shadows JV football player. We traveled up to your fine high school yesterday for a match at Coconino.  I simply had to let you know the pride you should feel for your team members and the student body fans.

While the scoreboard reflected a loss to your school in the game, your players were sportsmen in every sense of the word. They played their hearts out and were the most cordial opponents I have ever seen in a high school game. What really amazed me, however, was the student body reaction. They formed a tunnel at the exit of the stadium which I assumed was to cheer their own team. Later I realized that your team had already left the field. Your students stayed to congratulate our players as they walked to our bus!  Total class!

I thank your students and players for representing the best there is in human kindness and strength of spirit. Well done. Please forward this heartfelt message to all appropriate staff, players & students. Thank you.
Sincerely,

Kurt Myers, Cactus Shadows Parent

This is what we strive for everyday, thank you to the most amazing students, teachers, coaches and support staff in the land. Keeping it classy Coconino!!!

What you won't find on the Civics Exam
but important to know...
Conduct during playing of the National Anthem according to Federal guidelines (The code changed in 1993).  The composition consisting of the words and music known as The Star-Spangled Banner is designated the national anthem of the United States of America.
All official guidance for honoring our Flag or actions taken during playing of the National Anthem, is derived from authority in US Code (Note: The "Flag Code" as Title 36 is known).
§171. Conduct during playing
During rendition of the national anthem when the flag is displayed, all present except those in uniform should stand at attention facing the flag with the right hand over the heart. Men not in uniform should remove their headdress with their right hand and hold it at the left shoulder, the hand being over the heart. Persons in uniform should render the military salute at the first note of the anthem and retain this position until the last note. When the flag is not displayed, those present should face toward the music and act in the same manner they would if the flag were displayed there.
*Thank you Colonel Morris for this information

Counselor's Corner
With support and collaboration from Jen Parker and Cheryl Kirkland, and the Northern Arizona College Resource Center, we are excited to announce the opening of our College & Career Corner! We have created a space in the library that will be a resource for supporting students with college and career planning. Our official grand opening will be on October 2 and we will be available to meet with senior students this week on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday. Our College and Career Corner is another phase in creating a college-going culture for CHS and we look forward to helping students prepare for their future!
