Update ~ January 27-31, 2014

Celebrating Success
Our CHS Student Council has been working hard to complete and submit an application to the Arizona Association of Student Councils to host the annual Student Council conference at Coconino High School in 2016.  This is a highly competitive process and hosting the conference is an honor for the hosting school. The winning school was announced Saturday at this year's conference and..drum roll please...CHS won the bid. Congratulations to our student council and sponsors.  This is truly an honor for CHS.

Rachel's Challenge
Under the leadership of Joyce Daoust a group of dedicated and caring students have been meeting two times a month to discuss and plan for ways to promote kindness and compassion at our school. Recently they decided that 2x per month was not enough. They are now meeting each week on Thursday afternoons during Pathway time. They also changed their name to the Legion of Kindness. I look forward to hearing their ideas and plans and will share them with you all through the weekly PantherReport blog posts.

PLC Effectiveness Survey
Wow, thank you all for your thoughtful responses. 90% of you believe that the Wednesday Collaboration Team time is valuable to your teaching practice, 82% believe it positively impacts student achievement, 98% prefer the current "unstructured" CT time, 94% share instructional strategies while 73% are interested in more sharing and learning with colleagues.  Some CTs would like more direct feedback and a couple of teams are struggling because the members on their teams teach different subjects.  Overall, CTs are highly valued and productive. Please know that CHS administration will use your input and feedback to help plan for the future and incorporate your thoughts and ideas into the school improvement plan we create through the accreditation process. Again, thank you for taking the time to complete the survey.

Field Trips
'Tis the season for filed trip requests. If you are planning a field trip this spring please let me know as soon as possible and keep in mind that if a student is not passing his/her classes they probably should not miss school for a field trip. Students can print out their current grades from StudentVue for verification that they are indeed passing their classes.

Update January 21-24, 2014

Celebrating Success
Nice weekend for CHS clubs and sports - Our Boys JV and Varsity soccer teams beat FHS @ home today.  It was a beautiful day for a victory. Our Panther Special Olympic Floor Hockey Team, for the third year in a row,  took home silver and gold medals and were recognized with an overall gold medal for the team. Our Robotics team hosted a highly competitive FTC Robotics Championship Tournament with 29 schools from in and out of state.  Woop Woop, Go Panthers!

I am reading a really fascinating book called The Reign of Error by Diane Ravitch.  I highly recommend this book, and in my humble opinion every public school educator should read it. When Ravitch describes what a successful school should be like,  I can't help but think of Coconino. "...A balanced curriculum that includes not only reading, writing and mathematics but the sciences, literature, history, civics and foreign languages.  This school should have a rich arts program, where students learn to sing, dance, play an instrument, join an orchestra or band, perform in a play, sculpt or use technology, conduct research and construct projects.  Every student should have time for physical activity every day.  This school should have a library with a librarian and media specialist. This school should have a nurse, a psychologist and guidance counselors.  This school should have after-school programs where students explore interests, whether athletics, chess, robotics, history, dramatics, nature, scouts or other activities."
This is really what is is all about. This great school would not exist if not for the teachers that make it all happen.  As we enter the season of  the inevitable testing, please remember that we are all here for the same reason and remember to give yourselves a pat on the back for being a teacher and for all you do for our students.

Reminders
  • Progress report grades are due this Wednesday, January 22 by 3 p.m.  Also, if you had any students with an Incomplete for semester 1, please see Lynette.
  • Please take a few minutes during first hour this week to remind students about classroom and hallway expectations. Using one of Coconino's guiding principles to prompt this discussion would be helpful as well.  INTEGRITY - |inˈtegritē|- noun = The quality of being honest and having strong moral principles; moral uprightnessIf. (Doing the right thing even if no one is looking.) If you plan to take hand held devices from students who are non compliant, please inform your students of this as well.

Lunch Detention
The following students have lunch detention Tuesday, January 21. Any help in getting these students to room 204 for lunch would be greatly appreciated: Mikal Antunez, Patrick Day, Cristian Serrato Limones, Christopher Tachine, Bryan Van Ness, Jacob Walton, Marquis Fawbush

CHS Accreditation
Thank you for signing on to be on a committee. (If you haven't signed up yet, please see Becky.)  CHS Admin will be meeting with our representative from AdvancedEd on Monday, January 29. We will plan to meet in our respective groups beginning in February.

PLC Questionnaire
Thank you for your thoughtful responses to the survey. There are a few more teachers who have yet to complete the survey. Once everyone has had a chance to respond I will share the findings with you all.

Have a great short week!

Update ~ January 13-17, 2013

CHS Course Catalogue
Please take a minutes and review the course catalogue and make updates for spring registration.  Final edits are due by the end of January so the new catalogue can be posted to our website in early February.

Evaluations
We have nearly completed our first round of formal observations.  Before we begin the second round, we plan to take some time to pop in your rooms for a few minutes here an there.  We will begin to schedule second semester formal observations in February. I  look forward to spending time in your rooms.

ASSESSMENTS
AIMS~Please mark your calendars  2/24,2/25,3/3,3/4,4/8,4/9,4/16 (PE teachers especially take note.) Also, please remind students that we offer aademic tutoring in room 204 every Monday and Wednesday after school.

PARCC ~ Just in case you were dying to know... PARCC stands for Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers. For you leisurely reading ADE has a comprehensive website with up to date info about PARCC.  "The Ten Clicks" section is a quick overview that you might find helpful. Click here to connect to the ADE PARCC Website.  CHS will be participating in the spring field testing in English 9, English 11 and Geometry.  Teachers whose classes have been chosen have been notified.  As we get closer to the April testing dates, I will provide a schedule and letters will go home to these students as they will be missing a class in order to take the test in its entirety.

AZVAB ~  We have 100 kids who took the AZVAB. Carrie Johnson will begin calling these students to give their results during Pathways on  1/16/14.

PSAT ~ The results for students who took the PSAT are available in the counseling office.

Winter Formal  Student Council has asked that we take a few minutes this Wednesday 1/15 during third hour to have students select the winter formal royalty.  Ballots will be in your mail boxes for those students who wish to participate in the nominations.  The ballot is explanatory, but it would be helpful to read before sharing with students.  It is important that each student include their grade level on the ballot. Please return the completed ballots to Gaby Garcia in room (226) by Thursday.

Thank you for your patience and cooperation with the finals and first semester grade submissions and verifications. Report cards should be mailed home shortly.

FYI
I will be attending two workshops in Phx this week, so I will be out of the building Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Cris and Steve will be holding down the fort.
Have a great week!
