Celebrating Success
Nearly $1,000.00 has already been raised, in pennies, to support the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society to support research and help people with blood cancers live better, longer, quality lives. Thank you for making a difference in so many ways CHS! A special thank you to Dave Tessmer, Paula Wright and our NHS students for organizing and monitoring this campaign.

FYI Tuesday night, February 28, FUSD Secondary Principals together with Assistant Superintendent, Dave Dirksen, will be presenting the proposed Modified Six Period Day Schedule. Should the Governing Board endorse this plan and the Superintendent approve the schedule, we will begin to define and refine collaboration Wednesdays and Intervention Thursdays. Several of you have shared with me, your thoughts and ideas for meaningful interventions, thank you. Also, as you know, we will be moving toward the implementation of the Common Core Standards which will require time to learn and plan for implementation. The collaboration Wednesdays will provide time within the contractual day for us to work in our Collaborative Teams to examine the standards, identify essential learning outcomes (Content Objectives), create formative benchmark assessments, identify best teaching strategies, share and examine data, create opportunities for interventions and enrichment and ultimately improve student learning. Good work ahead!

StudentVue/ParentVue Now that many of our students and parents are logging on to view grades and attendance it is more important than ever for teachers to accurately post and maintain grades. Please see Jen Parker or Abel Garlant if you need help with your grade book.

AIMS All 10th graders will be taking the Writing and Reading tests on Tuesday and Wednesday. 11th and 12th graders who have not yet met and those who wish to attempt to exceed will also be testing. Thank you in advance for your support and cooperation this week.

Happy President's Day

Celebrating Success: Serious conversations about big ideas, mini-formative assessments, evaluating growth, figuring out ways to provide intensive interventions and enrichment, and how to help our current students be more successful in Algebra. These conversations took place last week while CHS Algebra 1 teachers and I spent two days together at  "Algebra Camp".  A special thank you to Lorena, James I, James M and Eric R for taking time out to attend this training and for sharing their thoughts and expertise, all in the name of improved student achievement at CHS.

A big thank you to the CHS Culinary Arts Team and students for all the delicious appetizers and desserts last week at the appetizer party.  What a treat!

Congratulations to our Boys Basketball Team for a great season... they made it all the way to the second round of the state playoffs.  Way to go Panthers!!!

Snow-Day Make-ups for this School year
For this school year, the snow days were built in the calendar as possible days off from school. The first and only snow days thus far will be made up by using the built in days. Therefore April 6 will be a regular day of school, as will April 9.  Future snow days, should they happen, would replace subsequent built-in days on the calendar.

Celebrating Success: CHS Honor Roll photo shoot and recognition is in the works. It is encouraging to know we have so many great students and truly it is their great teachers that have helped make them so. We'll let you know by the end of this week when the photo shoot will take place.

Thank you for your help and cooperation in keeping food out of the classrooms. Thanks too for ensuring that students have passes when they leave your room during class time.  The hallways are noticeably better.

Reminders: Registration for SY 2012-2013 is around the corner.  Cris and I will be making the rounds to your department meetings to discuss next year's course offerings.  We ask that you look over your course descriptions and update as necessary. If there are courses that do not have a brief description, please create one and submit to Cris. We will also be looking over subject area flow charts, pre-requisites, time lines for placement tests etc.

Fantastico Addendum

I have been meaning to let you all know about some additions to our CHS Faculty...
I am pleased to announce and welcome Wes Baron as our new English Teacher.  Wes has taken over for Susan James and will be teaching freshman English this year. Also you might recognize a familiar face around the building and more specifically in the foods room. Bill Mulkey is back. Yay!  Bill will be here teaching two intro to culinary classes first and second periods. Please help give these two teachers a warm CHS welcome!

Fantastico!

Celebrating Success: Fantastico is the word that came to mind when I was reflecting back on this week at CHS. The week began with the announcement that CHS came in 2nd place for the city wide School Cents program.  We were awarded $1,200.00.  (PTO meets Monday to decide how to spend the $). A special thank you to our PTO President Lydia Smith Hemphill!

Russ Randall along with CHS students were recognized and highlighted in a touching article in the Az daily Sun about caring for adults with disabilities. Nice job Russ!

I had the distinct pleasure of listening to our extraordinary CHS Symphonic band play at the Az Music Convention.  Wow! This was an amazing experience.  The large audience showed their appreciation of the performance by a standing ovation and an applause that lasted a long time. Congratualtions to our students and their masterful instructor, Jennifer Hamilton.

Panther Winter Sports wrapped up this week with impressive records all the way around: Boys varsity soccer finished 5-7, one of the best seasons they have ever had.
Girls varsity soccer finished 9-4 and lost in the first round of the state tournament to Kellis.
Wrestling headed to sectionals this weekend and off to the state tournament next.

Boys and Girls basketball teams played against FHS to an over capacity crowd Friday night. Girls lost by a smidgen and the Boys came from behind to win the game 47 to 42. The action continues as the Panthers move on to sectionals and then to state.
Our cheer squad qualified for Nationals and... how about our dance team? Wow!
Congratulations to all of our student athletes and their outstanding coaches. GO PANTHERS!

And the beat goes on...

Delayed Start this Wednesday, February 8th. We will meet in the mini-theatre at 7:30 AM for a Faculty Meeting, then off to work in our small, subject area collaborative teams.  Topics for the faculty meeting include: The Balanced Calendar/ Modified Six period Day proposal and accompanying Monkey Survey, PBIS Update and Upcoming Events.
During the delayed start this week, military personnel will be administering the AZVAB to students who signed up in advance, we will have a number of students in the building on Wednesday.

District Level Conversations include BYOD or Bring Your Own Devise.  Are we prepared for students to be able to bring their personal computers, iPads and other hand held devises? Common Grade book and requirements for grading (40%, 40% 20%), Aligning the Curriculum Maps to the new Common Core Standards, Common Assessments and FUSDs plan for piloting the Common Cores SY 2013-2014. I will keep you posted and will include these topics in future faculty meetings.

FYI: Several people from our office staff along with Cris Ray will be out of the building this Wednesday, Thursday and Friday to attend a Genesis training. Best to take care of office needs early week.

That's all for now, hope you have a great week!
