As I write the final blog of the 2012-13 I still can't believe it's the last week of school. I will use this final blog to express my personal appreciation for the many efforts you have made this year. We have taken on a lot and I know it has not been easy. I probably don't need to remind you of all that we have done, but when you see them all in a list it is really quite impressive: A new teacher performance evaluation tool (TPEC), Strengthening our PLCs, aligning curriculum by identifying Essential Learning Outcomes (ELOs) and Content Objectives (C.O.s), Schmoker lessons and the components of a effective lesson, Panther Pathways and ASP, PBIS implementation along with a three tiered discipline flow chart and minor infraction forms, Check in/Check out, S3 and its components, Common Core...whew, no wonder we're ready for summer. You have persevered with grace and willingness and for that I am extremely grateful. With all of this on our plates, I believe our students have achieved significant success and as we continue to monitor and adjust we can look forward to a calmer and even better next year. I plan to send a Panther Report or two out over the summer to keep you all informed as we continue to plan for next year.
Thank you, have a great week and a great summer!!!

Celebrating Success
Welcome back from the nice long weekend. Happily I think we are meeting the challenge of the waning days of the school year. These past few weeks have been filled with a lot of positive activity and excitement. Last week concluded with a very successful Prom. Saturday night was...
Tres Magnifique. The theme of the prom was Midnight in Paris and the location was transformed into elegant street in Paris and included a 20 foot replica of the Eiffel Tower. Over 300 students were there and at one point all of them were on the dance floor. Thanks Gaby Garcia, Erin Motes, dance chaperones and student council for a wonderful evening.
As you know last Thursday CHS Teachers and Students rolled up their sleeves and went to work in a serious way. In the spirit of giving back The annual Senior Community Service day was truly a special day where our students showed Flagstaff that they really do care - Each group went above and beyond to help our community. A special thank you to Janet Chavez, Cris ray and all who helped make our CHS Senior Service Day super successful.
Earlier last week 15 of CHS' extraordinary students (Top 5% of the graduating class) were recognized and honored at the annual Elks Club Banquet. The very next day our counselors, along with the CHS Academic Booster club, organized and hosted a beautiful awards banquet. Over 200 proud CHS family members and outstanding students gathered to pay tribute to their successes. As Cris said in her email, it was an amazing event and a pride full evening for the Panther Family. A special thank you to Karen Hughes and the counseling department for a great job!
And the week of celebration didn't end there...
Thursday was the annual Native American Honor Ceremony. All of our 9, 10. 11 and 12th grade Native American Students on who made the Honor Roll were honored and recognized by family and community members at an elegant ceremony and luncheon at NAU. Thank you LaShia and Joyce for your help with this event.
More to celebrate...
Along with the spirit of giving many CHS students donated their hand crafted bowls for a special event at heritage square to help raise money for the underprivileged of our community. Thank you Misty Ostrawski and students for contributing to this worthy cause.
CHS award winning poet, student Kirsty Horton read her award-winning poem at the opening session of this year's Northern AZ Bookfest on Saturday at the Coconino Center for the Arts!
And last but not least I would be remiss if I didn't mention the highlights of our very successful spring sports season...

Celebrating Success
The inaugural Coconino Multicultural Fair was a success! Lots of participation in the activities and students were especially attentive and respectful respectful during the performances! We couldn't have asked for anything better for our first year. This fair seemed to appeal to a wide range of students, especially those who on other occasions such as pep assemblies, have been uninterested or disengaged. Building a sense of connectedness was the primary goal and the reason the Mecha club organized this event. Thank you Janet Chavez and the MEChA Club and LaShia Sharfenberger and the AISIS Club for sponsoring this successful event. We look forward to making it a CHS tradition.
Observations/Evaluations
As we approach the final days of school, CHS administration is working on completing the formal observation and evaluation process. As you know the TPEC tool is new to all of us. There are a few steps that have to occur in order to finalize the process for this school year. If you have already been observed and have had a chance to view your evaluation, please go to Truenorth logic, Teacher Comment Section and check the "Acknowledge" button. It is section #6 "Formal Observation Comments (TEACHER). Once you have done this, we will check complete and close out TPEC for CHS.
PLCs
Each year FUSD principals are evaluated by the superintendent. Last year we were asked to develop professional goals. One of my goals was to promote and support high functioning collaborative teams within our school wide Professional Learning Community. In preparation for my post observation conference, I have been reflecting on our progress toward this goal. Our accomplishments this year include a focus on aligning curriculum with our instruction. We spent the better part of the fall term looking carefully at our current standards and identifying the essential learning outcomes (ELOs) for each subject matter. The next step was to create Content Objectives aligned with the identified ELOs and finally to begin the process of creating, analyzing and using common assessments. What I did not plan for was the time we would need to spend on learning the Common Core Standards. I want to let you all know how much I appreciate your willingness, open mindedness and flexibility with our Wednesday Collaborative Team work. With all that said, the next four Wednesdays are open for you to use your time as you see fit. We will resume our focused PLCs next school year with the goal of looking carefully at the common core standards, examining student achievement data to help identify students in need of increased time and support and offer timely directive and systematic interventions. Thanks for staying the course everyone and I promise Thursdays will be new and improved next year!
Celebrations
An end of the year party is in the works. We have some Coconino teachers who are are officially retiring this year and we would like to honor them at a special end of gathering. Please tentatively add to your list of end of year activities Thursday, May 23 at 4:00PM End of year party and retiree recognition. Becky is working on securing the location, checking in with retirees and confirming details. We will be sending invitations with confirmed date, time and location soon.
This Week
FYI Between Admin Council, Teacher of the Year Ceremony and my own daughter graduating from college this week, I will be in and out of the building all week. Steve also has a daughter graduating from college this week. Cris will be the steady Eddy and George Moate will be helping out again.
Have a great week!!!
