Welcome Back

Celebrating Success
Bonus day yay! Hope you were all able to enjoy the extended spring break and maybe catch your breath before the busy weeks ahead.

During our last Admin Council meeting we spent some time looking over FUSD School websites. I was pleased to see that many of you have updated and current information on your teacher pages. Thank you!  As you know our CHS website is where many people go to find information about our school. It is a continuous work in progress and I truly appreciate your efforts in putting our best face forward.

Congratulations to our CocoNuts FIRST Robotics Team for winning the Engineering Inspiration Award at the Utah Regional Competition over Spring Break. Now they move on to the Arizona Regionals to compete for the  Chairman's Award.
Go CocoNuts!

IEPs
As we move into this very busy time of year you will continue to see a number of invitations for you to attend IEP meetings. Please make every effort to attend, as the classroom teacher your input is critically important in these meetings. If you are unable to attend, it would be extremely helpful if you could share information with your student's case manager prior to the IEP meeting.

Attendance
Several of you have asked for clarification about when to mark a student absent vs. marking them tardy. While there is always an exception to every rule, here is how this should work...Once you take role, hopefully within the first five minutes after the tardy bell, if a student is not in class you should mark him/her absent. Here comes the exception...If the student arrives after the 2nd bell, but within 15 minutes of class, the teacher may go back and change the absence to a tardy. It is up to your professional discretion to decide whether or not the tardy is legitimate and warrants a change from an absence mark to a tardy mark. I realize this causes some frustration because it is not completely black and white. The bottom line is we want students in class, on time, every day. That is the message we need to give our students.  If marking them absent causes them not to be tardy, then the policy is working. If marking them absent when they arrive one or two minutes after the tardy bell causes them to ditch and miss class completely, then the policy is not working. There are a myriad of scenarios that I could describe and you are aware of and have experienced.  Please continue to use your best judgement and encourage students to attend class every day, on time.
