Update ~ Sept 21-25, 2015

Celebrating Success
As always, we have so many reasons to celebrate...I thought I would share this email I received from B. Hickman on Friday, 9/18.  I hope it makes your heart happy:

Dear Ms Hickman,
I am a parent of a Cactus Shadows JV football player. We traveled up to your fine high school yesterday for a match at Coconino.  I simply had to let you know the pride you should feel for your team members and the student body fans.

While the scoreboard reflected a loss to your school in the game, your players were sportsmen in every sense of the word. They played their hearts out and were the most cordial opponents I have ever seen in a high school game. What really amazed me, however, was the student body reaction. They formed a tunnel at the exit of the stadium which I assumed was to cheer their own team. Later I realized that your team had already left the field. Your students stayed to congratulate our players as they walked to our bus!  Total class!

I thank your students and players for representing the best there is in human kindness and strength of spirit. Well done. Please forward this heartfelt message to all appropriate staff, players & students. Thank you.
Sincerely,

Kurt Myers, Cactus Shadows Parent

This is what we strive for everyday, thank you to the most amazing students, teachers, coaches and support staff in the land. Keeping it classy Coconino!!!

What you won't find on the Civics Exam
but important to know...
Conduct during playing of the National Anthem according to Federal guidelines (The code changed in 1993).  The composition consisting of the words and music known as The Star-Spangled Banner is designated the national anthem of the United States of America.
All official guidance for honoring our Flag or actions taken during playing of the National Anthem, is derived from authority in US Code (Note: The "Flag Code" as Title 36 is known).
§171. Conduct during playing
During rendition of the national anthem when the flag is displayed, all present except those in uniform should stand at attention facing the flag with the right hand over the heart. Men not in uniform should remove their headdress with their right hand and hold it at the left shoulder, the hand being over the heart. Persons in uniform should render the military salute at the first note of the anthem and retain this position until the last note. When the flag is not displayed, those present should face toward the music and act in the same manner they would if the flag were displayed there.
*Thank you Colonel Morris for this information

Counselor's Corner
With support and collaboration from Jen Parker and Cheryl Kirkland, and the Northern Arizona College Resource Center, we are excited to announce the opening of our College & Career Corner! We have created a space in the library that will be a resource for supporting students with college and career planning. Our official grand opening will be on October 2 and we will be available to meet with senior students this week on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday. Our College and Career Corner is another phase in creating a college-going culture for CHS and we look forward to helping students prepare for their future!
