Update ~ February 29-March 4, 2016

Celebrating Success
Two CHS students are moving on to the state finals in the Poetry Out Loud competition. Sophia Weinzinger took first place and Carly Smith placed third in the regional competition.
Also, our CHS Orchestra earned a "Superior" and the band a "Superior with Distinction" at the ABODA festival last week. Wow!  Congratulations to these CHS students and teachers! Coconino Proud, Panther Strong!

Next year, right now
Believe it or not the 2016-17 begins now.  It is time for students to select courses for next year - first up are rising seniors.  Counselors will be visiting Junior English classrooms on Monday, 2/29 with registration materials.  Throughout the week junior students will be asking for teacher signatures in order to be able eligible for certain classes.  On Friday, the juniors will be in the computer labs selecting their courses on-line. Students who do not have their parent and necessary teacher signatures will not be permitted to participate in this round of registration.  Please contact Cris or any of our CHS counselors with questions.

Catch me Up...
What the heck is the AP Scholars Program?
After CHS was tasked by the powers that be at FUSD, to create a program similar to FHS’s AP Academy, Paula Wright, CHS AP Coordinator, invited CHS faculty to participate in a series of 301 workshops to work on this project. This group of teachers, counselors, and administrators decided not to use FHS as a model because they preferred to create something that would capture all of the unique courses offered at CHS.
The group decided to package our existing "honors" level course together and call the program the “Coconino AP Scholars Program”.  They felt this would not only satisfy the request from the superintendent, but would also be good way to highlight our numerous AP courses and wide range of additional "honors" level courses offered at CHS.  The "AP Scholars Program" title would be the umbrella under which these courses fall.
In addition to hosting a very successful 8th grade parent information night in early February, the team also created brochures, posters, and informational literature to help spread the word that CHS does indeed have AP courses and a whole host of other highly academic programs and classes.  Paula Wright & Christine Sapio visited 8th graders to present information about our programs. Further promotions include an ad on Panther TV, and presentations by current AP student ambassadors.

Reminders

  • Don't forget to check and change the cell phone symbol on your electronic device policy traffic light. The cell phone guy should be appropriately placed to be in accordance with your expectations during class time.  Consistency is key!
  • Do NOT allow students to eat their meals in your classrooms. It is important that we do not give the rodents who tend to multiply quickly an invitation to be in our building.

Update ~ February 22-26, 2016

Celebrating Success
Thank you to all who have sent photos of the many students who make your day...keep them coming. Also, when you have some good news to share, please drop me an e-mail or a post-it or a note in my box, so I can share all the amazing things happening all around us at CHS.

Where oh where have the ELOs gone?...
Some Collaborative Teams (CTs) submitted Essential Learning Outcomes (ELOs) before winter break, others requested additional time, while others felt the list of ELOs for the courses they teach needed no further refinement.  Cris and I have been reviewing the ELOs as they come in. At this time we would like to put in one last request for all CTs to submit the current list of ELOs, with the exception of those who submitted in December or more recently.  If your team is requesting feedback or editing, please indicate this in the communication to Cris or me. Our hope is to have this process completed at the conclusion of this year.  Next steps will be to examine current CSAs to ensure they are aligned with our stated ELOs.
Please submit via Google Docs, hard copy or an attachment to e-mail.

Safety & Security
There has been a bit of confusion about the request to have all doors closed during the school day.  I will try to clear that up here.  Recently the new State Fire Marshal met with assistant superintendent Bob Kuhn to review fire code regulations. From this meeting an updated set of requirements emerged, one being that all Classroom doors must be closed (unlocked), but closed during the school day.  I cringe when I have to ask you to do this, as it is contrary not only to the Lock Down and Shelter in Place guidelines, it also conflicts with the spirit of collaboration and positive school climate that we work so hard to uphold.  Anyway, for now (Ed and I are still arguing this one) please make sure your doors are closed during the school day.

IEP Meetings
Teacher input is critical for a successful IEP Meeting.  Thank you to all who attend regularly.  It is always best if the Gen Ed Teachers can be there in person, but if you are unable to attend, please remember to provide information about the student's progress or lack there of, to the case manager prior to the IEP Meeting.

Classroom Visits
As we complete the first round of formal observations, CHS Admin hopes to be more visible, popping in and out of classrooms again.  This year we have been using the guidelines of The Thoughtful ClassroomTeacher Effectiveness Rubric to help guide and focus the walkthroughs.  Please remember these are informal walk throughs and not part of the formal evaluation process. This spring we are focusing on the rubric's Essential Question; How does the teacher motivate students to do their best work and inspire the love of learning?
If you are interested in viewing the full rubric, click here.

Addendum to Feb 8 PantherReport

More info for this week...
I left out some VIPs who helped with the Student Council Convention. Included in the shout out should be; Leah & Daniel Casados, Paul & Peggy Pavlich, Julie Vlieg, Jon Edwards and Greg Reiff. Thank you to everyone who contributed to make this event so spectacular!

Fire Marshal in town
We can expect a visit from the state Fire Marshal this week. Here are the guidelines we are required to follow in order to pass inspection:

  • No parking in fire lanes
  • Student work posted on bulletin boards only (I promise I'm not making this one up)
  • Nothing hanging from ceilings
  • Noting covering or hanging from lights
  • No desks or tables in hallways
  • Classroom doors closed
  • Evacuation maps posted by each classroom door
Most of these requirements we already follow, but the doors closed is a new one for us.  Please make sure your doors are closed and unlocked (I know this is contrary to the required lock down procedures, but this is what the fire marshal has specified in order to pass inspection).

Thank you in advance for your cooperation.

Planning Ahead
  • March 7 is the City Wide STEM Night at the NAU Skydome
  • March 8 State of Black Arizona Event.  I will include details in next week's blog, but have been asked by B. Hickman to select 30 CHS students of African American or Native American to attend this event. More info soon!

Missing in Action
I forgot to tell you that I will not be in the building Tues, Wed and Thurs this week
I am in Phoenix today for the Rodel Reception/Orientation and am taking Wednesday and Thursday off to travel to California to spend time with my mom.

Update ~ February 8-12, 2016

Celebrating Succes

Misty eyes, full hearts, holy moly...
Coconino High School kicked it up a notch for the AASC Convention.  Honestly this event hosted by our very own CHS StudCo was indescribable. Coconino really shined this weekend as we hosted nearly 2000 student leaders from around the state. Our StudCo students are truly amazing.  I could go on and on, but I'll stop here and just say you should all be so proud of our students and our school. Congratulations and a great big giant thank you to Gaby Garcia and StudCo, Krista Dobosh, Theresa Freas, Colonel Morris, Dean Shaddy, Keith Nicolson, Craig Howdeshell, Ben Proctor, JROTC, Links Crew, Digital Media, Cheer, Dance, Band, Culinary, Baseball players, Art Club, CocoNuts, NHS, Asian Cultural Club, Special Olympics, Job Club, random student helpers, CHS parents and our custodians.  Thank you also to everyone at CHS for your patience, flexibility, focus  and understanding last week.  This was a  spectacular leadership convention and certainly a feather in our cap.

Anything else?
This week I received a letter from the AdvnacedED accreditation review board,  The first line of the letter reads "Dear Ms. Zanzucchi: Congratulations on your accreditation status change from being “under review” to accredited."  WOO HOO COCONINO!  We are out of the woods.  Excellent work everyone, we're moving forward.

Oh and one last thing... remember the story Mike Vogler shared about the eleven after school math intervention students?  This week they brought their friends so their friends could experience success too-and have some snacks.  And, even better than that, nine of the 11 original students passed their benchmark test and are no longer failing the class. - Applause

What's Happening this Week?

  • Tuesday Night, 2/9 CHS will be hosting an AP parent night for our incoming 9th grade parents.  We will be introducing our AP Scholars Program.
  • Tuesday, 2/9 CHS Ladies Basketball Team heading to post season play offs at Sunnyslope High School.  Go Panthers!
  • Thursday, 2/11 Winter Pep Assembly during Pathways 1:20-2:20pm in the main gym.
  • Friday, 2/12 CHS Wrestlers participating in the State Championships in Prescott.
Press on! Panther Strong!
