CELEBRATING SUCCESS
We made it through homecoming, fall break, spirit week and all the accompanying activities seemingly unscathed, thank you all for helping make CHS a vibrant school community!
Congratulations to all of our fall athletes and coaches for a great, hard fought, fall sports season. A special shout out to our Panther Volleyball team headed to the state playoffs this week and to our girls x-country team who won the region championship on Friday. Both boys and girls x-country teams are also headed to the state championship. Go Panthers! Panther Strong!
Thank you all for your contributions to our A+ School of Excellence application. We have a lot to be proud of. We will be reviewing and consolidating all of the information from Wednesday's brainstorming activity and sending the information to the A+ Draft 1 team by November 7.
SCHOOL SAFETY
We have fire drills down! Our entire building was evacuated and to the appropriate evacuation areas within three minutes of the sounding of the fire alarm. Thank you all for taking care to know and follow this important safety procedure. Our next safety drill will be a Shelter in Place drill on Tuesday, November 22 around 1:30pm. Please review the procedure provided in your red emergency folder and be sure to leave these instructions in your sub folders as well.
SPECIAL GUEST THIS WEEK
Tuesday, November 1, CHS will be hosting Arizona Representative Bob Thorpe as part of the Arizona Education Foundation's "Take your Legislator to School Day (TYLTS)." The visit is part of an ongoing relationship developed by Christine Sapio and Rep. Thorpe, beginning in 2014. The goal of TYLTS is to get our policy makers in our schools and classrooms so they can make informed decisions regarding education policy. Rep. Thorpe will visit with US History and Government classes, Student Council, senior English and CIT.
HOT TOPICS...
It is exciting and encouraging to hear lots of conversation at school about the upcoming election. As a school entity we can facilitate discussion, debates, moc-elections etc., just take care to withhold your personal political views and presidential candidate choice. Being a teacher is a powerful position and unfortunately, when we share our political views some people perceive this a an attempt to persuade the malleable minds of our students.
SPEAKING OF HOT TOPICs...
What's the latest with the CHS Dress Code? The Solutions Team met a couple of weeks ago to discuss the latest fashion trend, holy jeans. The team came to a consensus that we should interpret the "No large holes" verbiage of the current dress code to mean "No large holes when the holes are in the 'No No Square', meaning anywhere in the anterior or posterior pelvic region." In other words the whole should not expose the skin high above the knees, but holes at the knees are okay.
And then there's Halloween...I used to like Halloween, not so much anymore, especially when it falls on a week day. Students are permitted to wear a costume to school, however the only head accouterments that will be permitted are animal ears and such, that are part of the costume. Head-coverings such as ball caps, cowboy hats, stocking caps, bandanas etc., will not be permitted. Full face paint and masks are also not allowed. Grrrrrr!
DATES TO REMEMBER
11/1 ~ PBIS Meeting
11/2 ~ LINK Leader Freshmen Connection during second period
Looks like a quiet week at CHS :)

Update ~ October 24-28, 2016
CELEBRATING SUCCESS
AND BEAUTY AT CHS
Nizhoni means beautiful in Navajo. This weekend our CHS Native American club held the first annual Miss Native American CHS. Nizhoni indeed. The pageant was beautifully organized and all eleven contestants represented their families, their culture, their heritage and Coconino High School with pride, grace and poise. The beautiful evening highlighted knowledge, language, culture community and traditions. It was a very moving event and I couldn't be more proud of our Native American Club Students, sponsors and all eleven contestants. A special congratulations to Cheyenne Tso, our 2016 Miss Native American CHS.

I LOVE U GUYS . ORG...
True story. The i Love U Guys foundation focuses on the area of school safety around the country. For the past five years, FUSD has used the guidelines provided by the foundation to develop and implement school safety and emergency plans. It is recommended that we hold safety practices and evacuation drills at least one time per month. We are a little behind, but wanted you to know that we will have our first fire drill this Thursday, October 27 around 9:00am. We have also planned a Shelter in Place drill for Tuesday, November 22 at around 1:30pm. Obviously these are announced drills, later in the school year we will also have unannounced drills. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation. If you are in need of bedtime reading check out the i love U guys website by clicking here.
LET'S DANCE
It's not too late to join in for the Flash mob. I really think our kids would love to see everyone out there, so please consider joining us. If learning a dance routine seems intimidating, just know Erin Motes is a great instructor, and even if you don't know all the steps you can fake it and no one would know. If that still seems intimidating or uncomfortable, there is a part at the very end that all you have to do is join us on the dance floor (aka gym floor) and clap your hands over your head. Below are the dance practice times. You do not need to be there for every practice in order to participate.
Monday 7th period in the mini-theater and 2:30pm back stage main auditorium
Wednesday during combined lunch and 2:30pm back stage main auditorium
Thursday 2:30pm back stage main auditorium
Please keep an eye out for an email from Donna Lyons about this year's College Fair

Update ~ October 17-21, 2016
Hope you had a nice mini break and welcome back...
Celebrating Success
A special thank you to our CHS Custodians. They work hard every single day, and night to keep CHS looking its best. Our custodial crew works even harder when we hold big events like homecoming, lip dub etc. We are proud of our custodians and so grateful for all their hard work. Slowwww clap! THANK YOU!
COLLEGE APPLICATION CAMPAIGN
CHS has once again joined the National College Application Campaign. This year all of our seniors will be completing college applications on October 31 at CHS. The primary purpose of the campaign is to help seniors navigate and become comfortable with the complex college application process. The students also benefit from the experience of completing an application and learning about post secondary options. By having students complete applications at school some of the barriers to college access begin to dissolve. Although we know that 100% of CHS students do not plan to go to college, it is important for high school students to have postsecondary goals and to open doors for opportunities they may not have thought possible. I hope you will take some time in the next couple of weeks to talk to your students about their future goals and the importance of continuing education post high school, whatever that education might look like. Thank you in advance for your support of this campaign.
TELEPHONES
Everything you ever wanted to know about your classroom phone and more. Please sign in to TNL to sign up for the phone training scheduled for Tuesday, October 18 at 2:45pm in room 204 at CHS. Click here for TNL
WHAT TO SAY WHEN YOU SHOW UP FOR CLASS AND YOUR THE ONLY ONE THERE...
OK, Let's try this again. Flashmob practice will start this week.
When? October 19, 2:30pm
Where? Main Auditorium backstage
Who? The more the merrier...it would really be great if everyone participates.

Rolling into the second quarter of the school year, keep on being awesome, tell your students something good about them and have a great week!
Here is a link to the video we watched last year. Students who inspire us. For those who were not here last year, after watching this video together in a faculty meeting, some teachers followed the lead of the teachers in this video and the receiving students were very touched. If you have a few minutes to watch the video, I think it will make you smile and if you decide to tell your students that they inspire you, I would love to hear your stories.
Press on! Panther Strong!

CELEBRATING SUCCESS
As innovative programs around our state and country are being recognized, I can't help but brag about the many innovative practices, classes and programs at our own school. One such program is our CHS On-Track Program. It is a joy to visit this classroom and see the diverse group of students learning, interacting and eagerly participating in classroom discussion and activities. The teachers: Scott Dendy, Karlyn Heilman and Sarah Hester have created an environment where students are not only learning deeply but also discovering a sense of belonging and pride in the joys of learning together. This class is truly a unique community that uses interdisciplinary techniques and strategies to help students access content and build relationships. If you want to see what I'm talking about, next time your passing by room 507 7th or 8th period (2:20-3:20pm), take a peak, the students would love to see you and show off their work.
MAKING THE GRADE...
We continue to receive phone calls from parents and hear concerns from students regarding our grade book categories. Please make sure your grading practices are aligned to the new 80/20. The 80% Measurement Category IS NOT intended for "Tests" only. In fact, the 80% Measurement category is supposed to include a range of evidence of student learning which could include, but not limited to, process projects, presentations, essays, group projects, and other exhibits of student learning in addition to quizzes, tests and other assessments.
MODEL CITIZENSHIP
This year our seniors (Class of 2017) are required to pass the civics exam. We started administering the civics exam last year. This year we will be testing juniors and seniors who have yet to pass. The civics testing dates are November 21 ~ Juniors and November 22 ~ Seniors.

In order to receive 301 money for the workshop you will need to sign up through TNL Course # 34044.
