Update ~ April 29-May2

Celebrating Success
Have you heard the saying, If you don't feed the teachers, they'll eat the students? Or, if you don't feed the administrators they'll eat the teachers?  Thanks to James, Paul and all who helped provide the scrumptious meal for us last week, we don't have to worry about that around here. A big THANK YOU to all the cooks and helpers for the great meal and camaraderie last week, what a treat!

Also from out LINK Leaders and sponsors,  a great big thank you to Dean Shaddy and seven student members of the Studio 340 production crew who traveled after school Monday to the Link Leadership Training Retreat in Williams.  There, they worked with 80 CHS and FHS to direct and film the district-wide dance expectations video.  Their patience, time, energy and expertise is greatly appreciated.

Accreditation: Great work and valuable feedback from everyone. Thank you for meeting and for your work and input to help make CHS the best it can possibly be. Thank you to all the department chairs for getting us together for this important work.

CocoNuts Update: The team has returned from the world Championships in St. Louis. They made it all the way to the quarter finals. Congratulations to our Robotics Team for a stellar year!

Update ~ April 14-18, 2014

Celebrating Success
Year by year the complexities of education become more bewildering... All the more reason to pause and recognize the many wonderful things happening around us.  Thank you for taking the time at our faculty meeting to proudly share the many successes and accomplishments at Coconino High School.

As we approach the half way mark through testing season and I want to thank Carrie Johnson and the counseling department as well as all of you for giving up precious to help and support the process. This year we had about 80 Freshmen who took AIMS Science and their behavior was so exemplary the counselors felt compelled to give each student a Pawsitive Panther Award. In Donna's words THEY ROCKED!
AIMS  Math make-up is Tuesday, April 15 and ACTs for all juniors will take place the following week on Wednesday, April 23.

Recycling is in full swing.  A special thank you to Lang Suby and James Ingram's students for their hard work in keeping up with the high quantity of recycling at CHS.

Update ~ April 7-11, 2014

Celebrating Success
Need a good book to read? Shawna Klein rediscovered a simple way to get her students reading. She set up a little round table in her room with a selection of books displayed on picture holders. The students love to browse the new selections and they are reading more because of this book of the month display. It's really cool, I even find myself wanting to stop by her room to see which books she suggests for the month. (Photo of last month's display in this week's blog).

Spotlight on Success
I am looking forward to our Faculty Meeting on Wednesday 4/8. Each department will have about 3-5 minutes to share highlights from this year and future plans if applicable.  The meeting will start promptly at 1:15pm

Upcoming Professional Development 301 Opportunity
Priscilla Aydelott and Julia Manygoats are offering a special one evening course just for CHS teachers.  The course is called Argument Literacy and will include a quick review of close reading as well as lots of ideas to increase speaking and listening in the classroom. Undoubtedly the evening will include lots of laughs and professional camaraderie. You can register by going to Truenorth logic and searching for Argument literacy.  April 23, 3:00-7:00pm.  Hope to see you there.

Don't forget that if anyone asks what you do for a living, you can honestly and proudly say: I make a difference, each and every day. Hang in there during the upcoming barrage of testing and please encourage your students to continue to work hard and do their very best.
THANK YOU!

Midweek Update~ April 3, 2014

Thank you to everyone who helped make this year's 8th grade visitation the best ever. A special thank you to all of the teachers and students who hosted presentations ( x 15) in their classrooms and to the LinkCrew students who guided our students through the maze of high school, all afternoon. Thank you to our amazing office and cafeteria staff for making our new students feel welcome, comfortable and well fed. Thank you to our custodians for the spit and polish and finishing touches.  And, finally thank you to Bondo for putting it all together-Panther Strong!

Oh wait, there's more...holey moley is all I can say. The first annual STEM night was incredible. Over 4000 attendees came to the dome to participate in Science-Technology-Engineering and Math and Coconino High School was front and center with a very strong presence.  Thank you to Brian Locke, Craig Howdeshell, Keith Nicolson, Dave Tessmer, David Krassner, Kelley Smith, Amanda Stalvey, Dean Shaddy, Ted Lyons, Julie Vlieg, Dave Thompson and Christine Sapio and anyone else I may have missed for taking center stage and to all who were behind the scenes at this spectacular event. Panther Pride for sure!

Important Updates
Please carve out some time to nominate our CHS students for our upcoming awards recognition banquette. We are using this e-mail format as opposed to whole group nomination format based on feedback following last year's nomination process. You will need to open your Google account to access the shared document from LaShia. Please contact Karen Hughes or LaShia with questions.
Also, Compass bank has a new $1000.00 scholarship for high school students. You can nominate any student by going in person to a Compass bank and submitting the name of the student.

Remember to complete and submit your Accreditation Surveys to your department chairs by tomorrow April 4. Thank you again for taking the time to complete these surveys and providing feedback to help guide our five year Coconino High School Strategic Plan.
