Celebrating Success
Hats off to our Choir CHS Choir students. Last week they attended the "Music in the Parks" Festival in California and our Womens Chorus (the women from Chamber Singers) came in first place with a Superior rating...
Men's Chorus (the men from Chamber Singers) - First Place with a Superior rating
Chamber Singers - First Place with a rating of Superior
Sam Kumasaka - Outstanding Student Accompanist for his clarinet accompaniment for the Men.
The Men and Women tied for highest scores in the festival and Men's Chorus was named Best Overall HS Choir. Way to go Doug Riddle and students!!!
A special thank you to John Edwards and his students for going out on a limb and completing the Ever-Fi program sponsored by Alliance Bank (First school to complete the program in the state of AZ). This brought lots of positive attention to CHS.
Winding down
Thank you all for your input for Enrichment/Intervention Thursdays for next year. Many great ideas and thoughtful feedback. Please remember to turn in your year end reflection questions. Your feedback about this school year, your thoughts, ideas, and concerns are really important and we are committed to using your input to help plan for a better next year and beyond.
Awards and Scholarship Assembly~Wednesday, May 30 9:00 AM
Thank you to Diane and counselors, Amy Horn and Bondo for your work on streamlining the upcoming awards and scholarship assembly while making sure that all who deserve recognition are honored and included. Also a special thank you to Julie Vlieg, for helping refine the assembly bell schedule so that we have the least possible disruption to the leaning environment on the day of the assembly. It really does take a village. Teachers please note that teachers will be sitting with their classes during the assembly on Wednesday. The areas are marked on the map sent in the Thursday's e-mail ( 5/24 @ 2:20 PM) from Tammy Jones. Thank you in advance for your help in maintaining appropriate and respectful student conduct at this special all- school assembly.

Celebrating Success
30, 32, 35...these are scores from CHS students who recently took the ACT test. Great scores...Potential Flinn scholars in our midsts. Yay!!!
45...this is the number of students who took the English AP exam . This is terrific, up from about 12-15 who took it last year. Thank you Tim Aydelott for encouraging so many students to take the exam.
There's more...
How about our senior community service day? I heard lots of positive comments from students about how much they enjoyed the day. There is really something special about service to others.
Just a few of the many points of light at CHS.
This week at CHS
This Wednesday is our last delayed start day. We will meet in our large Collaborative teams.
This week CHS will be hosting a special fundraiser. On Monday, during first and second lunch in the North Commons, students, Sumer Walthour and Jasmine Horn will be selling special bracelets for $2 to help raise awareness and money for Alopecia Areata Research and Treatment. All proceeds will go to NAAF (National Alopecia Areata Foundation). Alopecia Areata is an autoimmune disease resulting in hair loss. It has no cure. The fundraising will conclude on Thursday with a crazy hair day and the winner for the craziest hair will win a gift card.
R.I.F.Process...
This is certainly an ugly acronym and it gives us all a knot in our stomach. The list will go to the board this Tuesday night. All the teachers on the RIF list have already been notified. I am sorry for the discomfort and uneasiness this process has caused and I am especially sorry for all who are affected by the RIF.
Master Board
Cris has been working tirelessly to create our SY2012-2013 board. Her goal is to let you all know precisely what and when you will be teaching next year before we dismiss on June 8th. We are also hoping to provide students with their schedules for next year by June 7th.
Rumor has it
that the AIMS results are in. This rumor is true, sort of. We have received the preliminary results, however they are "embargoed" until July 27, 2012. We can use the scores to verify graduation eligibility for seniors, but we are not at liberty to publicly share the scores yet. Seems odd, I know. I can share the overall AIMS passing percentages for CHS: Reading = 76% Writing = 59% Math = 55%.
Have a great week everyone. Remember no school Friday or Monday.

May Madness
Hope you all enjoyed the extra long weekend and welcome back.
Celebrating Success A special thank you to Gaby and Diane for a smashingly successful 2012 Prom. The best moment was when every student on the dance floor joined in to dance The Cupid Shuffle together...that was pretty cool! The students were really great, we had zero issues (A few close calls) but all in all it was a super event and everyone appeared to have a good time.
Common Assessments The assessment window will be May 21-June 7th. It is your choice as to whether or not to give the assessment as your final exam or not. Please click here to read the memo from Robert Hagstrom regarding the Common Assessments.
May Madness continues...This week:
Tuesday during 2nd hour Honor Roll students will be called down for the honor roll photo

The Final Stretch
Celebrating Success: The Arizona Supreme Court at Coconino High School was quite an honorable event for us and we should all be proud of our students. Following the Oral Arguments I had a chance to visit briefly with the judges and they each commented on the thoughtful questions posed by our students and how much they appreciated the respectful behavior of our student body. Another prideful moment for CHS.
Oh and have you heard that we have a published author among our student body? CHS student Brittany Oldroyd recently signed a contract to publish her first novel. Congratulations to Brittany!
20 Days and counting. Yes, we are in the final stretch. I'm guessing you already know this, but every week from here on out is a four day week. Every day counts. Along with the beautiful spring weather comes some challenges for us. Dress code has become more of an issue, keeping kids in class is more difficult, and a myriad of other spring fever related challenges require our attention. I can only ask that we do our best to help students stay focused and present. If you feel a student is inappropriately dressed, send them to Mr. Popham to change into something more suitable for school. (They can also call a parent to bring a change of clothes). Along the same lines, teachers please resist the temptation to come to school in vacation attire; flip flops, shorts, sweats, etc. We are the professionals and this should be evident to our students and the community. The way we dress matters.
Loose Ends: Before the close of this school year a few items we need to discuss: Finals, graduation, end of year check out procedures, common grade book, next year's intervention/enrichment plan, student and staff satisfaction survey and I'm sure I am leaving some things out. We will have a wrap up faculty meeting on Tuesday, May 29th to tie up these loose ends. Please mark your calendars.
Delayed start: This Wednesday at 7:30 AM the CHS administrators will be serving you all breakfast in the cafeteria. Following the breakfast we will have a faculty meeting in the mini-theater. Your colleagues, Tadd, Greg, Trish, David K. and Tim A. will present information about their experience at the Professional Learning Communities Conference. We will leave some time for Q & A and then break away for subject area PLC work.
