Celebrating Success
A big shout out to our CHS School Counselors. This week is National School Counseling Week and we truly have an amazing counseling team at CHS. Please join me in extending a heartfelt thank you to Karen, LaShia, Meg, Donna, Barrett, Loreal & Interns for their passion for education and dedication to ensuring that our students graduate college and career ready and are life long learners.
What's going on this week?
It's time for the AASC Convention. Our CHS Student Council has been working tirelessly to prepare for the Arizona Association of Student Councils. This is truly an honor and I am extremely proud to open our school doors and welcome nearly 2000 student leaders and their sponsors to CHS on Thursday, February 4.
Anything else?
Remember, due to the AASC Convention, Wednesday, February 3, NO EARLY RELEASE. Students will dismiss at 2:20PM. Then on Friday we will have an early release and students will dismiss at 11:00am.
Power of Our Words
Thank you to all of you who have already sent pictures of your students smiling when you told them how important they are to you. I sincerely hope each one of you will try this, it is really touching to see how happy the students faces are when they hear how important they are.
You can tell them we have a project at school and faculty and staff at Coconino are being asked to take a picture of someone who is important to them, someone who inspires them, someone who makes them want to come to work everyday...
Please send your pictures via e-mail to me or to my cell 928.814.2971
Happy February, have a great week!

Update ~ January 25-29, 2016
Celebrating Success
Thank you for you gracious responses and willingness to host the group of pre-service teachers from Korea. Ron Gray, NAU professor is very impressed that so many CHS teachers are willing to host the visitors in their classrooms.
Student Behaviors
As I mentioned in last week's Panther Report the reentry into the school year was a little bumpy and perhaps the things that seemed pretty well figured out by December may have lost some ground when we returned in January, or maybe you were able to pick up right where you left off. Whatever the case may be, I hope you found some time to reengage with your students and help bring their attention back to the business of learning. By the sound of the thread of e-mails on Friday, it seems we need to work together to address some school wide student behaviors...Consistency is key
Please take the following prompts as a gentle reminder and or strong suggestion so we can remedy the problems together...
What to say when you see Tobias or any of his 1400 peers repeatedly wearing a beanie, a ball cap, or any other type of hat in the building...
"I know it's cold outside BUT, as you know (They have to know by now) wearing hats in the building is not permitted. Please give me your hat and you can pick it up from the office at the end of the day." If the student is non-compliant send him/her to the RTR or if you feel it is a Tier 3 offense, send the student directly to Mr. Bonderud.
What to say when you see a first time offender of the hat wearing type...
"I know it's cold outside, but at CHS hats are not permitted in the building, please take off your hat." Hopefully the student will politely remove the hat and not put it on again five feet down the hallway. If this is not the case and the student is non-compliant send him/her to the RTR or if you feel it is a Tier 3 offense, send the student directly to Mr. Bonderud.
What to say when a student sets up a lunch buffet on the desk in your classroom...
"Eating food is permitted in designated eating areas only. One of the many reasons for this rule is that we have a rodent problem. Food containers, wrappers and food remnants in the trash cans in the classrooms are an open invitation to the rodents to come inside the building." Feel free to share all the other reasons you can think of. If the student is non-compliant send him/her to the RTR, or if you feel it is a Tier 3 offense send the student directly to Mr. Bonderud.
What to do to help improve hallway behavior...
Notice and be noticed. Be at your doorway during passing periods. The power of your presence is invaluable.
Students should remain in the classroom until the bell rings. Do not allow students to gather in the threshold of the doorway at the end of the class period. (One of my personal pet peeves).
What to do if you feel there are other wide spread misbehaviors that need attention...
Notify Mr. Bonderud
What to say when your co-worker seems overwhelmed ...
Take it Easy- Click here to take five, Thank you Glenn Frey and The Eagles

Update ~ January 19-22, 2016
Hope you had a nice long weekend and welcome back Aaaagain...
Faculty Meeting
Soooooooo, we had rescheduled the faculty meeting for this Wednesday, January 20 but then realized that this is also when grades are due. In order to allow the necessary time to complete your grades for the first progress report, the meeting will be rescheduled one last time. The faculty meeting will be Wednesday, January 27, 1:15-3:00pm.
As for grades...
The first three week progress report is due this Wednesday, January 20. However, due to the limited number of instructional days over the past three weeks, you can submit an "Incomplete" should you find you have an insufficient number of grades in your grade-book to accurately reflect student progress.
Hot Topics
Although I am not at liberty to offer commentary about these topics, thought you might be interested to know the six current political issues that directly affect Arizona Public Schools.
Last week at Admin Council, Superintendent Barbara Hickman shared a info-graphic highlighting the issues to keep an eye on.
For more detailed information click here to connect to the AZEDNEWS Website.
IEP Meetings
Thank you to all who have been attending to IEP meetings. This year we have had more general education teachers attending these important meetings than in years past. Not only do the special education case managers and parents appreciate your attendance, your input about the students is critical to help support the student's future success. Remember if you are unable to attend and IEP meeting, please submit information about the student to the case manager prior to the meeting.
Student Success
As the semester unfolds and you are perhaps asking students to present information orally in class, you might find it helpful to use a Presentation Rubric. Explicitly teaching oral presentation techniques can give students confidence and help make the presentation more enjoyable for the audience. Derek Born shared a simple rubric that he has found useful. Click here for the PVLEGS-Presentation Rubric.
Reminders:
~Paula Wright is hosting an AP Work session (301supported) at CHS room 201 on Wednesday, January 20 at 3:00pm.
~Student Council Convention 16 days away

Update~ January 11-15, 2016
Well, let's try this again...Welcome back :)
Although we are starting the semester a little behind, it was worth it. Don't you think Flagstaff looked like a scene inside a snow globe? I hope you enjoyed the extra few days and are feeling refreshed and ready to get back at it.
Updated District Snow Day Information
Please note that the scheduled snow day make up days on April 27,28 and 29 are now officially school days.
Faculty Meeting
Our meeting is rescheduled for Wednesday, January 20 1:15-3:00pm. Please mark your calendars!
School Wide Electronic Device Policy
Our students will likely need some reminders about school wide and classroom expectations. In the process of welcoming students back after the long break, please take a few minutes to review behavioral expectations, specifically the electronic device policy (They might have some new gadgets).
Student Engagement Protocol
Thought you might like this Lesson Reflection Protocol designed to promote active student engagement. Click here for the protocol.
Press on! Panther Strong!

Happy New Year January 4-8, 2016
Welcome Back!
We go back to
school tomorrow and my mind has moved from being on break to the anticipation of
being back at school and the semester ahead. I realized this feeling is similar
to returning to school after summer break.
Truthfully it is a little bitter sweet. I have enjoyed the break and am a little reluctant
to give up the freedom of not having a schedule to adhere to, but in all honesty, I am excited
to go back. My first step is to sit down
and write the first Panther Report of 2016. While I was thinking about how I am
feeling I imagined that you might be feeling some of the same emotions. I
thought to myself the teachers and students have also been away from the school
routine and the inevitable bell schedule.
They might be tired and maybe even unmotivated, nervous and perhaps a
little unhappy to be returning to school. Hmmmmm? What can I do to help make
the transition back to school more positive and invigorating?
First thing that came to mind, is Make it special. I thought we should start the semester with a chance to reacquaint ourselves and talk about our goals and hopes for CHS for 2016.
We will gather this Wednesday, January 6 at 1:15pm in the Cafeteria. Snacks will be provided. We will look at our vision statement: To create and maintain a vibrant school community that exemplifies academic excellence and model citizenship, and talk about what this really means. What does it look like? How do we transform this vision to reality? What are the expectations of the CHS administrative team? What are your expectations? What are the expectations of our students?
The ringing of the new year always reminds me to think about my hopes for the future. I think it is important to have hope for what the new year can bring. I hope we can sustain our work with positive energy, resilience and excitement of possibilities. It is also important for me to know what you hope for CHS and our school's future. I hope you will be willing to reflect and share your hopes at our gathering on Wednesday.
