Celebrating Success
This year continues to bring many reasons to celebrate. In the last few weeks as I walk around in the hallways I am in awe at the teaching and learning happening in every classroom in spite of the numerous interruptions and disruptions. Panther Strong indeed! Thank you CHS teachers!
CHS Sports wrap up continued:
- Eight of our CHS Track and Field Athletes made it to the State Championships.
- Tennis finished off the year strong and even came home with bragging rights with one match win v. FHS (First time in several years).
Theater
This year's Drama class produced a magical production of Peter Pan and Wendy. The acting talent and stage craft was remarkable. Congratulations to Kristy Long and her students. Great to see so many CHS Teachers at the weekend performance as well as many CHS families and community members.
Awards
Proud parents and grandparents gathered on Thursday for the annual CHS Student Academic Awards Ceremony. We truly have extraordinary students who will undoubtedly continue to thrive and make a positive impact wherever their journey takes them beyond Coconino High School. Congratulations also to Bob Friend and Ken Link who were recognized with an award presented by CHS students for their dedication and enthusiasm for teaching. A special thank you to karen Hughes and the CHS counselors for organizing this special event!
The same pride was felt at the annual JROTC Awards Ceremony on Tuesday. 150 cadets and their families came together to honor and recognize the many achievements accomplished by our CHS JROTC cadets. Congratulations to Chief Workman and Sargent Alves for their hard work and dedication to our students.
AIMS
Although I can't climb to the mountain top to shout out this exciting news (Scores are embargoed until sometime this summer), I can tell you that CHS 10th grade AIMS Reading scores are in...Drum roll please ~ 81% of our students met on this year's AIMS Reading. We slipped slightly in Writing (writing is not counted as part of our school profile by ADE), and Math scores are not in yet. 81% passing in Reading is the highest percentage passing for CHS in as long as anyone can remember. Congratulations to everyone and especially to our tenth grade English Teacher Team; Derek Born, Karlyn Heilman, Amy Bushyager and Shawna Klein. Way to Go, Panther Strong!
Technology Lessons
First, let me say I am really sorry that I didn't give you more lead time of the requirement to teach the internet safety information to all of our students. Somehow the need to do this annually got lost in translation and I sincerely apologize. Hopefully you will find time to present the video this Thursday during Pathways if you have not already. Once you have taught the lesson, please sign the Internet Safety Teacher sign off form and return to Becky. If you need to wait until Thursday, May 22, I understand and we will let tech services know to expect the remaining forms by finals week.
Testing, ah yes, testing
AP testing will continue through this week. PARCC Pilot testing is scheduled for next week, May 19 and 20. Please check email for details and the names of students who will be participating. Thank you for your patience, understanding and great attitudes throughout this arduous process. Remember the old saying, My mama told me there would be days like these?
Teacher Appreciation
I hope you all enjoyed the breakfast hosted by CHS Student Council, all the treats and Friday's lunch provided by the front office staff. I wish we could do that every week as a small way to show how much you are appreciated. Our Panther PIT (Parent Involvement Team) is hosting one more event in your honor. CHS Teachers are invited to the Wine Loft downtown, on Friday May 16 @ 4:00pm, to enjoy an adult beverage hosted by The Panther PIT. Invitations with a free drink coupon will be in your boxes this week.
"Better than a thousand days of diligent study is one day with a great teacher."
--Japanese proverb
Bike To School Day
BTSD is scheduled for Tuesday, 20 May. We are hoping to actively participate this year. Ben Proctor, John Edwards, Eric Neat and Les Hauer are working on putting together a continental breakfast for students and faculty who ride to school on the 20th. Hope you'll spread the word to your students and join us too.
Runsanity
A group of teachers is slowly forming for a run, walk or hike on Thursday, May 22 at 3:00pm. For those who prefer a sweaty and cathartic endeavor a six or seven mile up hill run to Elden Lookout is one option, for others a 2-3 mile hike or run will begin at the trailhead on Shultz Pass Rd. See Ken Link or Julie Vlieg for details.
Dodgeball Anyone?
The annual Marshall Adult Dodgeball Tournament is around the corner, Sunday, May 18. It's not too late to sign up. Registration fee for a team is $150.00.
FUSD Insurance and Open Enrollment
I have sent a separate e-mail with important information regarding Insurance benefits for SY 2014-15.
